I was working with my buddy on his 96 4wd changing spark plugs and wires, and he managed to drop a small washer into the 1st cylinder intake hole. We reassembled the rest of the engine and cranked it from the starter, and could hear the washer rattling around. We pulled it back down to the same spot, and were able to get HALF of the washer out. We can't hear it rattling around when we blow with compressed air, but when we crank it so the first cylinder is top dead, it won't quite make it and comes to a solid stop. I'm assuming we need to take that head off, but does anyone know if there is a way to dislodge it without ripping it apart, and also if he's in store to get his heads rebuilt?

If you damaged the cylinder wall its bad
If you damaged the piston thats bad but not as bad
If you damaged the head you can probably just get it rebuilt
I would get a bore scope and look down into there and see what it’s like. You probably will need a very lomg stick with a small magnet to pull it out if you dont wanna pull the head.

I've got the long magnet, plus it's really strong. Since the heads are aluminum I read somewhere that even if the washer was flat against the top of the heads it could just sort of stick from the heat and pressure? I'm not really sure.

Ive tried hooking the air compressor up, and then making sure the valve are closed and taping the spark plug hole so there is nowhere for the air to escape to. Hoping maybe the pressure would move it around.

You can drop a magnet down and hope for the best but its best if you pull the head to inspect for any damage. Atleast look inside with a bore scope

Last thing you want is a bent valve or damaged cylinder walls

I'm just trying to understand the logic of cranking an engine over when you know you dropped something metal inside it

Sorry for the lack of response. I took a long zip tie and a flexy magnet and put them into the spark hole, used the bent zip tie to knock loose anything inside, the magnet caught the washer in broken in 3 pieces. Put 700 miles on the engine since the washer and have had no issues at all.

Guaranteed you damaged the motor. You’ve at least scoured the cylinder/piston.
