    Hi Everyone!

    I am new to the whole 4x4 scene. . .I have a 2018 TRD Sport 4 x 4. I am looking for some cool places to hit up and explore a bit with my 4 x 4. Now, I am not looking for anything to crazy, as my truck is stock, but really some cool places to escape to and maybe camp!

    only if you have cell service... and I've already found several national forest roads that aren't on google earth/maps.

    Google simply isn't the app of choice for backcountry/off roading stuff. It's hit and miss.

    For Apps, go with something like Backcountry Navigator, Avenza, and get some paper maps, too.

    I have a stock 4x4 off road with no previous experience and I’ve done:

    Azuza ohv park- Good place for a first time if you’re just getting a feel for the truck and what it can do. Also good if you’re going alone since there’s quite a few people there.

    Rowher flats: This one is a bit harder but I was able to do it. Just make sure you keep an eye out on what off shoots you take.

    Cleghorn: Pretty good trail. The main trial is pretty easy and you can choose different off shoots depending on how hard you want to go. Pilot rock is also near by but I’ve never one it

    I know you can cache maps, but I've found the interface to be clunky and have already found several forest service roads that google doesn't show. And I'm not even talking out in the boonies - 100 miles form nowhere roads, I'm talking like a mile off the highway near Kirkwood Ski Resort...

    If you're going for a GPS only/offline app, IMO, you're better off sticking to one designed from the start for offline mapping, not one designed to help you find a Starbucks and tracks your online purchasing habits. One that directly ingests forest service MVUMs and topo maps. Well worth the $5 or $10 for the pro version of BCNav or the $0 for Avenza.

    Berdoo Canyon trail into J-tree is a good easy trail; I did it in a nearly stock (just had the sliders installed) Pre-runner with the factory tires not aired down and never even needed to turn on the locker.

    On the other side of the park, there's Pinkman Canyon (also pretty easy in dry weather), but that might not be a great choice for a new truck if you're in love with the pristine paint since the brush along the route makes "trail pinstriping" nearly unavoidable in a vehicle that wide. You'll want to air down to 15-20 psi for that one since it's a lot of loose sand, though.

    If you head out that way, there's an OHV area on the Salton Sea, but I've never checked it out since some of the descriptions made it sound a little past the level where going out alone is more than a little stupid.

    I was on this easy trail (just a forest road in EL Dorado NF) and flipped a log up and dinged my rocker panel under my door pretty good. Got sliders. First run with new slideres I was on that same trail (coincidentally)and (again) ran over a large branch, this time it flipped up past my sliders and dented my door...:annoyed:

    I hate that trail now...

    I am not sure if it is as accurate over there but we use that app on the East Coast for OHV trails.
