    Hello!
I searched the forums and couldn't find anything on dropping the transmission in a 2ng gen 4.0L 4X4 6 speed in order to get to the release bearing. Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me a link! thanks in advance!

If I cant find any sources of help I'm just gonna send it myself and document it as I go! :) Ill post pictures of how it went!

I probably have the same Harbor Freight transmission jack (the cheapest scissors jack one). It does the job but just barely.

I’m not going to lie this was a huge pain in the butt, I’ve never dropped a transmission in a 4x4 before and it’s super difficult. I’m on day three now, but keep in mind I am renting out a lift and can only work so long everyday.

Just keep at it. I thought the taco Mt was the easiest tranny tcase combo I have dropped. But than again I own my own lift n tranny jacks.

Ok me and my dad did this in about 1 day, but keep in mind its not the throwout going bad its the quill, if its making the chirp then you either need the repair sleeve from URD or the hydro kit, i went with the repair sleeve and did my clutch all at the same time its lasted the 2k miles ive put on it so far i don't drive a lot.

So Its all said and done, I did the sleeve kit, and it was good for about .5 miles, then my luck I feel a pulsing/vibration in the floor board and transmission when its in gear. I have the worst luck. I torqued everything down to spec. I don't know what can be wrong. I greased the sleeve and bearing. I am so mad at my transmission.

Does the clutch engage properly? Is there any grinding when switching gears?

The clutch and flywheel were machined and changed by the pervious owner but he didn't knows about the bad quill. The only thing I changed was the release bearing :(

The clutch engages very smooth, shifting gears is smooth but when its in gear it feels as though the transmission is grinding.

I dropped mine off this morning to have a new clutch and rear seal put in it. I'm curious what your issue is since I've got the URD parts going in as well. Hopefully it all goes well.

Trying to think what the issue is ive been loving the repair sleeve for the fact it stopped my chirping noise my truck was only at 135,000 when it went out too im now at 137,000 i actually bought it with the chirp thinking that it was just dry but after all the reading i found out.

Be careful about that quill kit. Mine came with very pointy anchor screws that looked like they could damage and possibly crack the quill if tightened too much. The quill (snout) is very thin aluminum and there are a couple of pics floating around of the quill breaking off that had the quill kit IIRC. Not sure though that over-tightening the screws actually caused the breaks but something did, its just something to be aware of. The bad news is the quill is not a separate part of the transmission like on the 5-speed but cast into the front and the whole transmission has to be disassembled. Way to go Toyota. Not.

OP, since none of us are there its kind of hard to do an inspection and narrow this down. It could be a number of things from misalignment of the case-to-engine or even inside the transmission. I have read of a few install nightmares where it gets hung up and the weight of the transmission bends the input shaft, and that could cause something like this.

However, if this were mine, the least expensive and easiest next look would be to drain the gear oil into a clean basin and see what comes out. Make sure to have a magnet handy.

I heard that the quills are very strong and don't usually bed but they shatter. I think it was aligned pretty well, but Ill just go ahead and drain a little gear oil out and see what it looks like. The dealership in Germany said they wouldn't touch because I put the sleeve kit in it. I'm about to see if there is a T56 magnum swap on this truck. (joking)

So after driving it a few miles I honestly think that the sleeve might not have been tight enough and is possible loose on the quill. I am dreading dropping the transmission again.
