Thanks for posting this. I currently just mash our sleeping pads between the wheel wells, but this looks really cool and I was getting ready to build a slightly modified version until I hit a question. It doesn't seem to give much head room if you sit up. I'm short, but I can still hit my head on the shell if a sit up from the bed bottom. Can you sit up at all with this, or do you have to scoot out on your back?

Yeah I'm 5'10 and I cannot sit up inside. I can completely hunch over and move things around while sitting or I lay on my stomach. It's not amazing but better than nothing.

Worked out super nice. My daughter and I used it this weekend. I did not keep all of the exaxt specs unfortunately as we kind of made adjustments as we went with a rough idea in mind.
    Here are the approximate measurements:
The left side is about 13.5” wide
    Right side 9 3/4” wide
Used 1/4” plywood for everything except the center pull outs that is 3/4
The center pieces are 27”,27”, and19.5
The height is made so it rests on the ledge of the bedliner.
We made the width so each piece fits into the grooves of the bottom of the bedliner and notched it up front. Basically the pieces fit in and are held by gravity, the bedliner grooves and tight fits. Hope that makes sense.

I recently finished my build and I want to say thanks to everyone who has posted their recommendations and photos on this thread... very helpful! Here are a few photos of my build. I used a router to do the joinery work. The first photo shows the 3 bits I used (for perspective, the tool shanks are 1/4"). To notch the 2x10, I used a 4 flute ball end cutter. I could only get a depth of about 1" so I had to then flip the board over to cut through the last 1/2" of thickness. This cutter would also work well for the 2x6's but I used a 2-flute 3/4" cutter (wider cutter for fewer passes). Finally, I found the radius tool helpful for getting the end notches in the 2x6's to sit flush against the truck box side ledges. I chose to go cheap and light with 1/2" plywood instead of 3/4". I wish I had gone thicker, because both boards are somewhat warped haha. I likely could have selected more flat sheets, but I made the mistake of going to Home Depot on a Saturday afternoon, and that always stresses me out.

What length truck bed you have and where is that mattress from?

@rogue.tacoma My bed length is 74" (6'2") and I bought the mattress at CostCo, a 3" memory foam topper, full size (57" wide). I had to separately buy the cotton cover, ordered it on Amazon. If I had known in advance that the foam topper did not include a cover, I likely would have bought a combo for less money.

Love this simple design! You have had some time to use the platform, and wanted any insight as to what you would change if anything before I start my build.

When I read “didn’t take more than a couple hours”, I expected to see a total
hack job. But this is really nicely done. Clean, simple design, and functional. Nice job!

    1. I'd do a better job of making sure I got quality carpet, tighten it and glue/staple it properly. I'd also properly cover the underside. I've gotten a few splinters taking the pieces in and out.

    2. I mention it in the post, but I'd definitely go a little narrower on the width of the large pieces. With the lip of the shell over the bed, and the carpet on top of that, getting the pieces to drop down is a little difficult. I get the benefit of a super snug fit, but maybe I'd get that benefit with a little less wood and a little thicker carpet. I hope that makes sense.

I just picked up the wood and the carpet from Lowe’s, really excited to get this thing put together tomorrow; however, I can’t FOR THE LIFE OF ME, fit the panels inside the bed.

How do you angle it in there without almost ripping a hole in your bug screens? I even cut it 56 3/4”
