The ones at this house actually are not that old. A few years of exposure to the salty sea air makes them look a couple decades older than they actually are!

 

This is the first day of a week-long family vacation in the Outer Banks, and I figured I'd share this...

I rented a Scoot Coupe (the green thing in some of the photos) for two hours and took a drive up Virginia Dare Trail from Nags Head to Kill Devil Hills. I spotted this beast parked in front of a convenience store in Kill Devil Hills, saw that it was RHD, and immediately pulled over to take pictures...

 

That is beautiful. Is that legal though?

 

No emissions testing in this part of North Carolina!

I run Quaker State Full Syn 5w-30 and napa gold/ carquest blue (wix) filters. Why QS? Because its 7$ less than mobil around here and 8$ less then Pennzoil. Its good stuff and all the sludge myths about any oil are so outdated now, its 2018 not 1970.

 

Not if you use a full synthetic and its appropriate filter.
I would use the filter intended for use with the oil you buy. In other words a lot of people on here buy genuine Toyota filters, I would not run those filters for 10,000 unless those filters are specified they can go 10,000 miles.
Or you can just change the filter out every 5k.
I’m not sure if the 4 cyl uses the same filter as the 2016+ Tacomas. Toyota recommends 10,000 mile oil changes on the 3rd Gen. if they use the same filters then those filters will do the job for 10,000 miles.

Synthetic oils can be run a long time. They have 25,000 mile oils and filters. Those are great if you drive a ton. because you should change your oil at the specified OCI or at 1 year. Which ever comes first. Many people don’t drive that much in a year so 10,000 miles per change is fine

 

Blackstone Labs is your friend. Send your oil samples to them and they can let you know how much life the oil had left in it. By experimenting with different oil brand/weight and filter, I had my Tacoma up to 12k OCI, wife's Sienna is at 7,500 OCI (would be 10K but I can't figure out where the higher than average silica is coming from), and my F250 is now up to 7k OCI. The longer OCI pays for itself when buying good synthetic oil because you don't have to buy it as often.

And yes, most manufacturers now spec the regular ATF for the power steering system. ATF is just hydraulic fluid with seal conditioners and friction modifiers. I think the reason it isn't used in the brake system is the high temperature breakdown that would occur in the calipers.
