From what i understand, 90311-40001 is the ORIGINAL seal which was since replaced by 90311-40034 and today i went to the dealer and part number had again been changed to 90311-A0031. Just for those curious and its listed for 09+ 4.0 5speed auto trans.

Updated original post to reflect this.
    Thanks for the info.

I try to keep the pictures updated but at least once a year file hosts remove them. I apologize if they dont show up. I sold my Tacoma for a new GMC Sierra but still try to drop by these forums and update important topics.

Crawled under my truck yesterday to check the torque on the "propeller" shaft bolts and discovered a small amount of fluid on the output shaft bearing. Doing a search I came up with this link. It's a very well no nonsense video that you can actually hear and see.

    https://youtu.be/aC8yfiTiw3M

After reading all of this thread, I'm going to follow the recommendations of putting the truck in neutral, marking the position of the center carrier bolts and the shaft with a white marker.

The seal was a pita to reset... has anyone else had trouble? I used the PVC.. maybe i didnt put enought ATF fluid on the edges?

Anyway, i set it as even as i could. The bottom right section is set a tad deeper than the top left. Maybe it was the angle or not enough ATF around the edge of the seal but i could not for the life of me get it set evenly.

I put it all back together and drove it up and down the street to see if it would leak. So far do good.

Any thoughts on if it will hold?

I have a trail ride coming up this weekend and would like to not have to redo it.

The trail ride should be a good test. I'm sure you'll be good to go. Besides putting ATF on the seal, did you put some on the housing too? How about the part#, did you use part #90311-a0031?

Keep us posted after your trail ride this weekend.

Did this a few weeks ago on my 07' PreRunner. After a few weeks, I picked up a driveline vibration going uphill at ~10% throttle. Checked the seal and there was a small amount of ATF beneath the driveshaft. Is the seal not set properly? I used the pvc method and it took some force to set it, but it looked pretty straight to me. I added a little ATF to be safe until I can figure this out, but didn't have time to do a proper check today. Any recommendations?

Just replaced mine and it’s leaking next day. How far in is it suppose to go in. Think I beat it in too far. Classic me pulled it out without paying attention.

I was 2.5 QTs low from leaking for so long. Solved my shifting issue

Yeah I’m in way further than that. A friend of a friend at trans shop said bring it in and they will pull tail and something about a bushing, Couple hundo. Think I’ll just put in another one not as far.
Still can’t believe 1 qt came out. took 4 back in before any would come out overflow at temp.
    Thanks

I ended up buying another seal and having a shop install it again. They said I needed to remove the outer cover in order to get the seal all the way pressed in. Looks like it solved my leak, but the driveline vibration is still terrible. I've tried washers under the CB and experimented with moving the CB around a bit, but nothing seems to make it better. Might have to bring it back in :(

According to some parts houses, that seal is a no fit on a 2005 Tacoma 2WD, but how many people are still driving these. I just replaced mine in my 05 with this one.

It was tough to get in place but it is working and not leaking. I had to whack it into submission with a 1 1/2 (i think) PVC coupler.

Getting the old seal out, even with a seal puller (that did not work), was also very difficult. I used a bent screwdriver that was ground down at the tip to grab the old seal.

I replaced my leaking seal about a month ago and I thought all was good until I went underneath and found the leak has returned. What the heck?? I have a 2006 2wd Prerunner.

Why are we draining the transmission? Can't you just change the seal and fill the transfer case? The transfer case has a separate drain and fill than the tranny, also much easier to fill since it doesnt need to be at a certain temperature.
