Everyone, or anyone who has purchased a Tacoma with a sunroof from 2016 up to now, test the reliability of your sunroof seal, weather you life in a dry area or wet area, because I just discovered that my 2016 Tacoma, which I purchased July 2016 has leak on the rear of it right down the center. I live in Albuquerque, NM, where the state has been in severe drought for almost a year and this past weekend 6/17/18. It rained pretty hard for one half day, Saturday...It also one day the previous week. Needless to say, I was driving around while it was raining and my wife felt water droplets hit her shoulder. I took my truck in to get it serviced and found out that the sunroof needed to be replaced completely at my expense, which is over $700, because it was 3000 miles over the warranty, which was for only 3 years or 36,000 miles. It is now at 39,064 miles. It’s crazy, considering that it hardly rains here and my truck is garage kept. The service dept. at Toyota determined that it has not been tampered with, nor any of both internal or external objects have damaged it. I called the 800 number for Toyota and they are willing to pay 60%, after I complained, but I still feel that it’s unfair that anything should come out of my pocket. Anyway, I implore you to test the reliability of your sunroof before its to late. If you suspect that there’s any type of moisture, demand that it be replaced immediately. Let’s teach the “rude jerks” who don’t stand behind their faulty products at Toyota and tell you that you are in the wrong.

Welcome to the forum. Bummer to have an issue just past warranty but it happens. Did they tell you what caused the failure? Seems like they are trying to work with you if they offered to pay 60% even though it's past the warranty. Good luck.

It’s pretty obvious that the sunroof has a defect and the service supervisor saw it. But to be honest with you, they are trying to look the other way and pretend like this doesn’t happen. Yes, you are right about covering 60% but nothing should come out of my pocket if it is obvious that that the roof has a defect

I stay away from moon/sun roof(s). It has been my experience at some time they leak or break. I do keep vehicles for a long time.

Yep, that’s what my wife told me, that I should’ve stayed away from sunroofs. I tell you what though, but I have talked to one guy at the Toyota at one 800 customer service number. I asked to speak to a supervisor and he did Nied me speaking to a supervisor. I didn’t even threaten the guy afterwords, but a supervisor called me back two hours later and was a jerk about it. I asked them why he even called me, and he said that I had requested it. I said yes but the first guy I spoke with denied me to talking to one. He said that he wasn’t around. I told him that he was full of shit

    Completely ???
What is exactly wrong with it ?
Dealers approach is to always replace the whole thing instead of fixing what is wrong, not the most brilliant method.
    Drain ports clogged ?

Co-worker of mine had a BMW transmission go out at 8k miles and a few weeks past the 4 year warranty. $11k fix. BMW wouldn't help at all. I'd be happy Toyota is working with you.

It’s got a small half moon opening in the middle of the gasket seal. Not sure of all sunroof have that, but the service manager pointed it out and said that, that’s what was causing the leak.

A transmission is a little different than a sunroof. Because, with a transmission, if you have a manual transmission, it could be the drivers fault for not shifting properly. But it still sucks that the dealership wouldn’t help

Again, what sucks is that it hardly rains in Albuquerque...and it can be proven. So it could’ve been leaking for a while

They can’t just change the gasket. The entire sunroof has to be replaced. But I’ll bet you anything if it was still under warranty, they would figure out a way to just replace the gasket. Maybe it’s just another way to try and make money

While I can understand your frustration, Toyota said they’d cover 60% of the cost, out of warranty. Imagine how many situations just like yours with people out of warranty having issues and is expecting Toyota to cover the full price. Warranties would be meaningless. I think they are treating your fairly as painful as it is.

yup. 60% is better than nothing. I'd take that.
