What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

Sounds like a loose plug.

 

That's what I was checking for last time I pulled the dash apart to install accessory switches. Didn't find any loose plugs, but figured it was a loose wire terminal in one of the plugs. Only happens like 3 times a year so I'll live...

 

It's the first thing I did when I got my Taco

 

I added tie down points in the bed using the bed bolts. It ended up much harder than I had anticipated but I should have known better.



I used

these and I knew I'd need to bore the hole wider, no problem. That was done in a few minutes. I also soaked the bed bolts in PB Blaster knowing the seven years they had been on the truck would make them more difficult to remove. That was an understatement apparently.

The middle two bolts were not bad, I did them with a breaker bar and socket, when I then found the first time consuming part. The washer won't come off without removing the rings on the bolt. If you don't need to ever remove the washer I suppose this is a good design. I, however, needed to put the tie down ring above the washer. So I filed the rings down and got the washers off.



Those re-torqued down fine too. The real issue ended up being the front two bolts, the drain holes seem to drip in a way that all water coming out of the bed runs down those bolts and really rusts them. If you attempt this, I recommend getting under there and using a wire brush on those bolts before trying to remove them. I still ended up needing my impact gun to remove them and it was hitting the whole way out. It took me about 1.5 hours for something that should have been much faster.

 

My thoughts: keep the emblem, get the black dust caps.

 

Out w/ the beat up old stock skid, and in w/ the TRD Pro Skid from a Turd Gen.

 

Finally got around to installing the cali raised grille.

 

For $99 dollars i think i would dip the dust caps myself and the Tacoma badge.

put 34-ish inch tires are on! (285/75/17)

 

Went on a much needed “spur of the moment” camping trips yesterday. It’s nice to have all your camping gear consolidated so you can just throw it in and go.

I'd be more scared about snapping the door lug off and taking a dirt nap. No way that thing is rated for people weight.

pretty rare day. let me wife take my Tacoma to work so she can bring home our bag set (or corn hole depending on what region you are from) that she let her co-workers borrow almost a year ago. She parked in a corner spot and took this picture to let me know. ha-ha. And she didn't park like an asshole which was nice to see.

 

Would you know if this is longer and extends further back (protecting more) than the TRD 2nd gen skid?

 

They way they are made, I'd imagine the bolts would shear before the actual base cracked in a way that would cut you. If it did fail, it would fail around the bolt holes first since all the weight is being transferred to the bolts and around.
My fear would be my weight would bend the door latch and then no more shutting door.

 

It provides a seamless skid to past the oil pan. However, the oil drain plugs are in different spots so that skid would have to come off in order to change oil on a 2nd gen. But to answer your question, I don't believe its any longer.

However, it is longer than just using a front trd skid. The TRD OR had a second skid that protects the oil pan, this wouldn't be longer than both.

 

My opinion, get the black caps and keep the side emblems. Perhaps consider blacking them out.
