How many of you installed the kit, wired it up, worked perfectly.....but could still pull the handle and open the tailgate when it was “locked”. Guess I need to open up the tailgate and see why the metal rods in the tailgate aren’t engaging far enough into the bed

I ended up doing it, wired it along the right side of the truck and wired into the driver side c-pillar.

Had issues with the PnL 5400's (manual lock) cantilever snapping after 2+ years of use. I should have just went with the 8521 initially. More work to install, but definitely worth it. It's only been a few hours since I've installed it, I hope it lasts 10x longer than the manual version. It feels like the value of the truck went up at least $5,000 with this auto lock installed. For those who own a non-3rd gen Tacoma, I would say that the 8521 is a must-have.

BTW, thanks to all the threads on the forums that provided guidance on the installation of the 8521s. Your write-ups surely made things a lot more clear to a noob like me.

    My install:
    Zip tied cable to frame
Used the hole under the passenger side seat
Left quick-release connector outside of tailgate
    8521 unlocks with passenger door

Just did this over the past 2 days. Tied the rip cord just in case the locking mech fails. After watching a few videos it took me about 45 minutes total to do this, and I took my time and continually double checked everything. Excellent mod that I think every one should do, especially for the money.

I have the same setup. Best investment ever. Especially since I almost always have tools and a compressor back there.

Installed mx4 and had to remove the front rail, has anyone installed d rings where the front rail used to go using the existing bolts?
