Hey guys, my first thread so cut me some slack. lol
So my issue, major shimmy in my steering wheel between 45-60mph. SO much that I can't live with it. no shimmy before I got the wheels (had stock wheels on before). Bought pro comp prodigy wheels 17x9 and -6mm offset. Got them installed at cassidy tire. had them balance twice already and rotate front to rear but same problem so i don't think i have a bad or bent wheel. not sure if wheels are just too heavy?? does that even make sense?
Cassidy tires told me I had some play on lower ball joints but will that really cause my steering wheels to shimmy aggressively?

Any ideas? Is anyone else running same size wheels with no issues? I am also just running stock suspension for now.

Your hub bore is bigger than the stock tacomas with that wheel I bet. Your having the shimmy because there is a tiny bit of play. I believe pro comps are around 108ish hub bore and stock is 106.1. Try hubcentric rings, that will clear up the slack and hopefully get rid of the shimmy for you

    Thanks!
No problem, it's a very inexpensive fix to try out. Install those and go from there. If you still have the shimmy, try road force balancing the tires at another shop and check the driveline angles for driveline vibes as well.

also many dealerships install using impact..... try loosening and retightening by hand slowly alternating lugnuts as you tighten.....

I have procomp rims had the same issue it took 3 tire shops to find one who didn't lie and ACTUALLY DYNAMICALLY balanced. Both inside and outside rim weights. Make sure they are not just doing static balance. I don't know if it's the 33" tires or the ProComp rims but something is below par with the procomp rims I have and it took me 3 shops to find one who got them balanced.

Update: got the hub centric rings. Unfortunately, did not work for me same exact shake on my steering wheel. -_- wheels balance out at zero.. just don't know what the issue can be anymore. Bout to just go back to my stock wheel. Even tho I'm really hating having to do that. Maybe I'll have them powered coated before putting them back

bummer... this didn't happen with the stock setup correct?

Did you try another shop? Road force balance?

No it did not do it with the stock wheels. And do you really think a road balance will make a difference?

It has made a difference for me in the past, going to another shop also has. One shop can say a wheel/tire is balanced when it is really not. Sometimes it just matters how willing the employee is to actually do a good job and not just rush you out the door too.

Or it's your call to go back to the stockers. Really just matters how important keeping the pro comp rims are to you. The answer just might take some time of trial and error.

Find a shop with a good Hunter road force balance machine. Its possible that you have a wheel out of round, or one of your tires could have a high/low spot. I have personally seen it on brand new tires so its always possible. Hope this helps!

This is one of those "Keep it simple stupid" suggestions, but did you ask the shop if they are using a hub centric adapter when balancing? Otherwise they will never balance on hub centric wheels.

I'm having the same damn issue. I've purchased new tires, wheels, did a complete rotor and brake job, and tried to raise the carrier bearing on the drive shaft...still get a steering wheel shimmy between 60 and 75. It's pretty bad. My local dealership is useless. They told me I had a bent rim, that's why I bought new ones.

I'm currently running GFX Toyota wheels (106 mm center bore). I'm going to bring them back to have them balanced...again...today and will make sure they do it right. I love my Tacoma, but honestly, I can't remember what it feels like for the thing to not shake on the highway. And I do a lot of highway driving.

Absolutely sure new wheels are 106mm bore?

Measure just in case? The issue described falls into the 108 vs 106 bore...108 with a cap or ring is ok but straight 108 sometimes leads to balance issues.
