Apologies, no offense meant at all which is why mine was simply a suggestion.

Two things: this thread is titled/targeted to the OP's point, which was directed at 2nd gen.

My point was simply that threads start meandering off-topic and threads become diffused and more difficult to track or search for when others initiate posts that re-direct the original focus.

As such, thought it might be better to initiate a post specifically for Gen 3's that would consolidate answers for 3rd gens and therefore be easier for others to search for by topic.

This is a great and helpful thread and it would seem best if future 3rd Gen owners could search and easily find answers to that topic by searching for key words directed to the topic and Gen 3.

    Be well!

    Best regards,

    JL

Well then I apologize for the defensive response, I was hoping to get a quick answer from this thread without having to start a new thread in the 3rd gen section but it looks like that would be my best option.

This is not the easiest option for you, but your investment in time and effort will make it far more efficient and easier for any other 3rd Gen owner that wants to research this very helpful topic for his/her car.

In order to jump start your Gen3 post/answers, I'd suggest PMing the posters who thus far have been so helpful once you put together your initial post, quotes and links. I'm sure they will chime in to support your post if they have additional insight.

To quote Spock-- "...the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few..."

    Good on you!

So, I did a price analysis (5/30, technically 5/31 at 2am) with PowerStop Caliper/Rotor/Pad kits from Rock Auto. The Calipers and Brackets that come with the kit are supposedly powder coated red. This encompasses both front and rear upgrades to the 2014 4Runner brakes with the SOS Performance rear disc bracket kit (made for 2010+ 4Runner rear brake setup). I "THINK" this is everything needed to do front and rear. This was purely what i thought was needed for the upgrade. I would still do your own research before purchasing parts.

The SOS price uses the 15% off coupon (taco-15) with the StopTech SS brake line option. RockAuto reflects the 5% coupon. Camelback Toyota reflects the 3% coupon (TWPartz). All shipping is to me at 89011.

Another thing to note, the core charges on the Powerstop brake kits. Since we don't have the proper cores, I assume no one will be trying to pass their stock taco front calipers in as a suitable core (i mathed it for giggles).

I'll be doing just the Front upgrade in the next month or so. Cant swing both at the moment, but at least this gives you an idea of what you could expect to pay; and a proper list of what you would need.

How important or necessary are the dust covers?

I'd say pretty important for the front. If you blow a CV, grease could contaminate the rotor while you are driving.

    Good to know.

I ordered two right instead of a left and right. Dust cover, looks like this weekend is out.

So I'm going to go ahead and get some CV Axles since both boats have a rip and hopefully some wheel bearings.

Might as well just rebuild the whole thing while it's apart.

So I got this done, and it went very well. Took about 3 hours, but that was popping a couple beers. The difference was immediate, and I don't have the brake fade I used to. In fact I was even hitting the brake too hard the first couple of days.

Here's what this write up doesn't tell you.

You're going to need an impact and a case of liquid wrench.

Somewhere for your kid to go for the day so he doesn't repeat all the new words you're going to make up to describe what you're doing.

If you do braided lines, you need to plan on new hard lines between the braided line and the caliper.

Past that, this is awesome and I appreciate the OPs time and work to figure this out for us all.

Throw a big screwdriver in the disc slots and butt it up against the caliper bracket, then get busy with a breaker bar and jack handle for an extension. Throw a towel on the breaker and socket to catch anything if your breaker decides to explode. Step on the jack handle and give a little jump.

Dont forget to anti-seize the axle splines and nut when you put it back together.

You pics appear to be for a 2WD Tacoma. How does this work on a 4WD?

    Cool.

Do you happen to know the socket size for the axle nut?

Crazy, I went 115k on my OE pads, I changed out pads and rotors with OE again. This mod sounds like a good idea if you run big tires or tow a lot though!

@hx989 Still not sure what is idiotic. I'm genuinely interested in what you think the flaw is in my advise. Also would like to know your approach to removing a stuck axle nut, without an impact gun. Not everyone can afford or has access to awesome tools. For you to saw something like this, you must have a better way? These threads are about helping people out, please share your advise.
