I have a RTT and a Travel Trailer. Here is my $.02
Keep the Travel Trailer for times you want to camp that style.
Then pick up a RTT and some bedrails. Give it a try if you aren’t that into You won’t be out much $. They sell fast on TW.
How’d you like that airstream? My wife wants one bad.

You just need a bucket and a pool noodle.

Its a Smittybilt Overlander (not fully deployed as shown) on top of a Prinsu cabrak. I mounted it to two extra T-bars and simply take it off with the bars still attached when not in use.

Here’s how I mounted it post:

Does it matter whether you install the RTT over the truck bed or over the passenger cabin?

Not really, all depends on the rack you use and if you have a shell or not. M603holden’s setup is great for aerodynamics and for keeping the center or gravity lower. Definitely more aerodynamic and looks good if you mount it over the bed without a shell, and I think it looks better than mine mounted over the shell if yours is flat and can handle the weight, otherwise you have to go over the cab like I did and go Beverly Hillbilly style since my shell is a higher profile MX one.

I also put a platform in my shell, so I can sleep 4 or 5 if needed, with extra headroom for all. But I mostly use the platform for gear and for winter weather camping without the RTT.

I camp in northern New Mexico quite a bit and is the main reason I got a RTT. Lots of public lands where you can just pull over and camp. Camping with a RTT is very limited in Texas. New Mexico, Utah, Colorado... RTT is great!

But personally, if I already have an Airstream, I wouldn’t get a RTT.
