Thoughts on this system for my 2007 TRD Sport doublecab

Still trying to fine tune a descent sound system for my Tacoma. So far I think this is going to be the set up. Your thoughts, comments and opinions are welcome. Like I said, trying to fine tune before I purchase, but I think I'm very close. I don't want a competition series sound system, but I do want something that sounds nice. If 1 is for a crap system and 10 is competition, I'm looking for about a 6 or 7. Am I on the right track? Check it ...

I'm leaving the stereo stock to make it look like nothing has been done, but if someone decides they still wanna take a closer peak without my permission, they will have to face the Python 991 alarm/remore start system.

Your gonna need some kind of equalizer to adjust that stealthbox. Which would only come with an after market HU. I mean you dont have to have one but everyone on here would prolly suggest one. Lots of ppl replace just the HU and keep their stock speakers cause they sound waaay better. Not that I would do that, just sayin the HU is the most crucial component.

 

That's cool. I will definitely look into that. But what about those speakers I have picked out? I don't know much about sound systems. Back in the day when I was just out of high school Rockford Fosgate was the shit. As well as MTX and a few others. I did listen to the JLs and imo they sound good, I have also heard Alpine R series and they were pretty nice. But there's so much stuff out there. I know that JL TR series is their low end stuff, the VRs sounded great though.

Anyone else care to chime in?

Oh, I totally forgot. I need an AMP. Have not picked one out yet. I wan ted a JL HD series, but they are ALL the money, more than I wanna spend. Was thinking about pushing it with a Alpine PDX5. Thoughts?

 

I'm looking for a 5 channel amp too and the signal to noise on the PDX-5 scares the crap out of me. People say Alpine is overly harsh on some of their numbers but I don't care what they say, 77dB is hell no for me. Also, 1% THD at RMS rated power is a big heaping helping of no thanks on top of that hell no.

Right now I'm considering the JL HD900/5. I really wanted the Alpine at first but those numbers are atrocious.

 

The stealthbox is way overpriced for what it is... save money there

Put C5s in the front doors... use the money ou saved on this upgrade ($300 for a component set) There is just no way Id be OK with a low end coaxial set in the doors and keeping the stock tweeter on top of that? No way...

What is you MAX MAX amp budget?

You can get a HD 900/5 for $600. Not bad for what you get at all.

I was looking at the Stealthbox too, then I remembered I had some JBL subs lying around and built a box for them. Total investment: $50 for materials. The subs were a hun something when I bought them I think.



Sooo, 600-700 for the JL Stealthbox turned into $50 and a few days worth of tinkering. With the money you save you can buy some wicked other stuffs, and I'd definitely go component for the front doors if I were you.

BTW Dev: $600 for the HD 900/5 where? The cheapest I can find it is $700.

 

I'm getting the Stealthbox at a pretty good deal. $599. I also don't want a huge box going accross the entire back seat of the Taco. I keep all my fishing lures, leader line, gloves, pliers, etc on one side, the stealthbox goes in the other side. It's perfect in that sense.
So are you saying that I should forget 6x9's in the front and only go 6.5 on the front doors, what about rear doors? c5's are a little pricey, though if I can get away with just speakers in the front, it will be doable.
$600 for an amp sounds descent. Where can I get the HD 900/5 for $600? Least expensive I saw was $700 from a site I never heard of.
My other issue is that if I get everything on line, I do save some $$, but it is the piece of mind that comes with paying my local dealer for the speakers, amps, wiring kits and install, that way if something goes wrong they take care of it, warranty, diagnostic, everything. I think I'd rather pay a little more to get great, worry free customer service than just whore everything out on the net to save a few bucks. I work a ton of hours and don't have the time to mess with any issues that may come up my self. Know what I mean?

You wont get it for $600 with warranty (HD 900/5) and it will be online. I have quotes from $700-750 from authorised dealers w/ full warranty but I have to pay tax.

The C5s wont have issues... I have found em online $300 flat. When I get home I will get the source off my spreadsheet and give it to you. An amp... yeah a warranty would be good.

IMO the C5 sounds better than any other JL speakers beter than the ZRs and the only difference is the ZRs have aluminum dome tweets (same crossover with different setting and same woofer) and they are 150-200 more expensive. If you dont like super bright tweets dont get the ZRs... they are not as annoying as some metal domes but still too bright IMO.

The 6.5 Components have a bit less bass however the 6.5" is already strong there and the 6.5 is less distorted. The C5 can sound PERFECT IMO but falls down when there is too much midbass material AND detailed midrange material at once or when there is too much treble that extends into the mid with lots of midbass. The 6.5" lessens the effect slightly vs the 6x9.

You will need adaptor plates... ********* sells them if you dont want to make em or have someone else make em.

I heard that JL 13TW5 in the store and it thumps! Im gonna get a custom box built for it and put it behind the backseat. Its an expensive sub, but well worth it.

 

You cant go wrong with JL and Alpine. Pull the Trigger!

As far as the PDX5 goes. I hear alot of guff about the S/N but I haven't noticed a problem with it? It's probably cleaner than the Memphis amp I had before this, although that may be due to running a 9887 now vs a stock head unit before.

From what I've read, the noise floor on the PDX5 is generated by a difference in voltage from the preouts on a HU, rather than actual noise generated by the amplifier itself.

Not sure if I interpreted it wrong, but, as previously stated, I haven't had any problems with the noise floor on mine.
