    Must be a BajaCalifornia thing.

Never have had any trouble with buying insurance here to travel into Mexico.

Ive been to Mexico for months at a time, and I never leave the country without it. In the dozens of years ive gone back and forth to mexico, ive had about 3 or 4 occasions where I have to file a claim with the insurance and I've never have had a problem having it fulfilled.

@David K is 100% correct, although you can purchase your own US insurance to cover your own vehicle you absolutely must purchase Mexican insurance, it is illegal to drive without it. This holds true for rental cars too, never buy rental car insurance through a US agency or even the rental car co themselves or via Travelocity etc it is all 100% invalid in Mexico. If you do not have current valid Mexican auto insurance in the event of an accident you can be dragged straight to jail and held until you pay cash in full for any damage you cause to property or persons ...including full liability for their medical bills in cash. Once you are in jail these situations generally also include various other fines, fees, taxes and gringo wanna go home charges...IE: blackmail. These situations are no joke and unfortunately occur often, we know someone that was held until $7k was paid in full in cash and this was in a major tourist town in Baja Sur.

Great trip report as always Dave ! One of these days we should connect for a trip down the west side... Just heard some nightmare stories about the routes into San Juanico after the storm. We had some friends spend 4 days trying all 3 - north, east and south roads to get in there and after all the effort they completely missed all of the surf :/

    hmm.. never knew that.

Like I said, I've been in a few mishaps down there, two of them involving property damage to a Mexican vehicle, my insurance worked it out without any issues.

Who knows why I've never been told anything.. :notsure:

Ramon thinks it just a big game of bumper cars when he's down there.

Just returned from 11-day expedition to some of Baja's greatest spots! Was with three other Toyota 4x4s. A fantastic time, over 1700 miles... Huge trip report coming!
