What Oil Filter Strap or Cap Wrench Works Best For You On The 1st Gen 2.4?

Barely got my old strap wrench to work on my new purchase. The cap wrenches I had (all Toyota) would not work. What are you using? Brand name? Its really tight up in there to get a strap wrench. I changed it from the rear passenger side. Thx.

I got one years ago because of a stuck filter on a car my DIL had, which was difficult to access in traditional ways.

I'd had all the cap sets, straps, etc etc collected over the years for all the various hodge podge of vehicles I'd had.

I've since thrown them all away. This particular Lisle has been all I've needed. If I ever had something with a bigger dia filter, I'd just get the bigger Lisle.

Yeah... I have that one too, but have found it WILL slip if someone over tighted the filter. It doesn't have good grip in some circumferences of the filters.

 

I've actually had this one crush into the sides of the filter when needed to get more bite.

Much better than the 'ole screwdriver through the case trick. Well, at least neater.

Sometimes on my old strap filters if more bite was needed, I'd wrap a strip of 80 grit paper around the inside. Bet that would still work with either Lisle we are suggesting.

I just like the import one because of the 3/8 drive. Lets you use multiple attachments for various vehicle configurations. Normally I can use a swivel head 12" ratchet for most things, but using an extension on my 2.7 filter gets the ratchet down where it has room to move.

Of course all I have to do is crack it loose then it's hand from there.

 

Personally only ever hand tight my oil filters for my 2.4 / 3.4 vehicles, and are easy enough to take them off by hand alone even when they are greased up. Besides doing the first filter change on a vehicle where the previous owner who worked on it over torqued it.

Tool wise though if forced the only one I find consistent enough for me is exact mm fit oil filter cap socket (get mine from autozone or ebay if az dont have the right size). The tools like the adjustable ones, the strap kind, wrench/plier looking ones, I just cant get enough space to get working or they keep slipping off. Thats just me though.

 

Thanks for the replies. I like the hand tight idea. I got mine just a little tighter than hand tight. It felt good and tight at hand tight. It really doesn't seem like there

 

is much room for the swivel, especially with the taller filter. If I am wrong please tell me because I really want to use the taller filter
