Just wanted to chime in and say throw AAA in this same pool. I drove my X5 to Portland (from Sacramento) multiple times earlier this year to see a dying aunt (RIP). For our mid term bill, AAA jacked up the premium on the X5 by $120/month!! We didn't even notice it cos we had auto payment set and we NEVER received any formal paperwork for this increase. My wife finally caught it in the bank statement and I called AAA and they gave me this same crap.

That they increased our premium based on the prev 2-3 months of driving and then doing a assumption that IS the annual mileage driven on the vehicle. And they added this annual assumed rate to the mid year bill!! We spoke to a supervisor (been a AAA customer for 15 years and we have house insurance, etc and NOT a single claim for over 5 years). They wouldn't bulge. Said it's "the system".

I called Geico and switched over immediately. My rates also fell compared to what I was paying AAA. I asked Geico rep and dunno if they were telling the truth or not but they don't seem to care on the mileages driven as long as you specify the typical "12k/year" in the policy.

Rather than the rates they charge you, which is the most visible indicator of how good your insurance is, wait till you have a claim and see how they treat you then. Some "bargains" are not as good as they appear. Then too, one agent may get your business where another would not, for a similar reason, that being that he omitted certain coverage that you really needed. I'm not saying that one company is always going to be better than another, but you don't always get what you thought you paid for, either. Changing companies simply because of a rate adjustment is not justified because the new company has no history with you and may cancel at the drop of a hat, where there old company would not.

^ But almost all insurance companies have horror stories incl the big names. If you reddit State Farm, AAA and some of the major names, there's more than enough bad experiences with repairs/replacements/coverage. My insurance raises my rates for a "assumption" annual mileage and I've paid $$$ every month with multiple premises, incl yearly AAA membership (never used one bit), and ZERO claims to date. I've never received a check from AAA in 15 years saying "here's a $50 giftcard for your loyalty and zero claims and making us rich".

Instead, the reward I get is a increased monthly premium cos AAA "thinks" I will drive too much by Dec end. What happens if I end up with a small fender bender at my fault...what will be my AAA rates then? There's NO LOYALTY with Corporate America and the reason why they do this kinda shit and get away with it cos they know noone can do anything, other than look for another provider.

I chose Geico as I've read good things about them (and couple of guys at my work have had good experiences with their coverage/repair work).

Wouldn't be any bad/worse than AAA/State Farm, etc. At least a $150 saved every month means I'm richer by $1800 at the end of year which I can use to mod my future Taco :).
