    Hello

First thread for me, purchased 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road and had the TRD Pro air intake installed. My past vehicles always had the K&N filters that were washable.
Does anyone know if this filter is washable with cleaner and then re-oiled like the K&N filters?

I use the K&N filter cleaner and oil for my TRD filter. Seems to work fine.

Do a search, a lot of people say the oil can get into past the filter and into the maf/throttle body. I personally stick to the paper filters

Toyota has a cleaning kit for it (PTR4300088) but I'm sure there's generic stuff for cheaper.

Thanks for the feedback, this is first time I have owned a Tacoma and I really don't know if I feel a difference, as for the sound, don't really notice a sound difference either. The current TRD Pro filter does not look like you add the oil? Will have to do alittle more research on that?

This truck definitely not a quick truck, but I am really happy with it. I am slowly adding few cosmetic things, trying to black out all the emblems and next will be the grill.

I live in Colorado and like taking it up to the mountains and driving on dirt mountain roads, but nothing really crazy. I originally purchased the Toyota hard tri fold bed cover, but now thinking of getting a cap for the bed? I have the Barcelona Red color and does anyone recommend a hard top cap?

When K&N screewd up my mass air flow senesor on my firsted gen taco ,I stoped using them, Yes the are reusale but it cost more to replacr the MAS then to buy a new papper fliter and the move more air yes , but I would rather have a cleaner air the the 1/10 hp gain it has to offer, I dont think anyone can notice it.

When I purchased my 2017 Tacoma TRD Off road, I upgraded to the TRD Pro Air intake....so are you saying its best to just purchase a new filter oppose to cleaning it with cleaner that Toyota sells? Someone else warned about the oil affecting the throttle body? The current filter does not seem liked it was oiled? Unless they use a clear type oil, not like the K&N red oil?

Yes it is. I don’t have the intake but the Trd air filter. I use to have a k&n filter back in the days and I hate washing it then dry it then oil it. After 20k I changed my filter to an afe dry filter. Afe is easy to care. Just wash it with water and put it back in. No need to dry. Ez pz. Hope this helps.

The engines in these trucks are protected by automatic systems that guard against so many outcomes that the chances of you damaging your engine by over-revving, overloading, or other abuses is so slim that it’s mostly not a concern. The one avenue the engine manufacturers leave in our hands to screw the whole thing up is the air filter.

Why anyone would take the chance on replacing the perfectly functional, and perfectly reliable stock paper element filter for some janky oil-soaked peice of foam that runs the risk of dusting your engine, or ruining your MAF is beyond me. All for no increase in horsepower, and according to previous posts in this thread we are supposed to just throw the oil element away anyways.

    It’s like people can’t leave well-enough alone.

    No mods whatsoever!
I have an older TRD CAI and replaced it with an aFe pro dry filter. Clean it with soap and water. If you keep the K&N, don't drowned it in oil or you throw a code.

It’s up to you but when the check engine light comes on and the dealer says it’s your mass air flow sensor and the oil from the air filter cause it and that’s not covered under warranty then it’s on you. The advantages of the cold air intake don’t justify it for me but may for someone else tho.

Thanks for everyone's responses and thoughts, I kinda like the idea of the aFe dry filter.
But as for Petr's response, if the TRD Pro system has the special wash and oil filter? How can the dealer not honor their warranty if they installed their own system with filter? The purpose of the oil is to catch finer dust fragments and I always used the K&N filters in previous vehicles without issues.

But thanks anyway for all responses, gives me something to think about.

I have the TRD air filter also. I think the secret with these filters is after you oil them let them sit for 24 hours before installing back in the truck. I picked up a second filter so I always have a clean and oiled filter ready to go. This allows time for the excess oil to dry and not mess up the maf.

My Pro came with the performance intake. The first thing I did is put in the paper filter.

You can clean the TRD air filter the same way you clean a KN, and you can even use KN oil if you have some. And you won't bugger up you sensor unless you oil the shit out of the filter. Use the appropriate amount of oil and you'll never have a problem.

I honestly prefer the paper because I live in dusty rocky mountain west and I feel better with the higher levels of filtration paper provides. If you live in a moist, non-dusty climate, I'd have no problem running an oiled air filter.

I have the TRD CAI. Will the OEM dry paper filter fit in the TRD CAI housing or are they different sizes? Looks like the stock paper may be thicker based on prior posts. If someone knows the proper size to put a paper filter in the TRD CAI box that would be much appreciated.

    thanks!
