People miss under duress and adrenalin pumping at 15 ft.
Easy at the range putting holes in paper.
Who I might engage at 60’+ or under ...either case would rather have a long gun. Just like any LEO or SWAT.
And I’ve seen both miss at 12’ in a shoot house....with a pistola.
Don’t bring gravel to a gun fight....

I’ve got a .44m lever carbine that has taken the ‘go to’ title at my house. It’s so light, short, and versatile as well as easy to shoot. It fits behind the seat, on it, and/or under it. In the truck, SUV, or car. I don’t carry it everywhere but I could.

Why an AR "pistol?" I'm more curious. If I were going to go that route I and I lived in a state that allowed it, I would do SBR but I live in Cali so even the thought of a pistol for PP is not justified until its justified.

I would say there are too many variables to make a blanket statement like that. I agree with you, if its self defense then you should be fine but it's always situational and you'll want to be able to justify why you had "x" firearm. Even if it's never asked.

You seem to have some solid experience and an avid firearm enthusiast. Let's keep the ego to a minimum though. There are a lot of "instructors" out there and very few are solid and know their stuff. It's one thing to teach weapon manipulation and another to teach proper law in regards to self defense. Not saying your instructor was one or the either, it sounds like he has a reputable resume in both. Just need to throw that out.

At the end of the day stick to what works best for your situation. What works for one person may not work for another. Most of the time a compact pistol will suffice for defense but honestly, I'm not a fan of the sub-compact category. Too small for any practical purpose. I prefer my G19 for anything on the daily and can still engage a target relatively accurately at 25 yds.

We live in a strange world today. You have to consider many different things when choosing to carry a firearm and even more so if you're choosing to keep a rifle available. The likeliness of you using a rifle is slim, but its not a bad thing to have available if out and about and some wack job starts popping rounds off.

I just threw that out there for people in places where you can't drive around with a loaded rifle.... I hate AR "pistols" and think they are pretty dumb, but it's one situation that it could be useful, maybe? I'm not that well versed on what you can and can't have in CA.

Nothing. If you think it would be practical for any real purpose, or even remotely cool, you can’t have it.

The main reason I think a long gun isn’t as adapted for vehicle use/storage is this: How do you want to exit the vehicle with it? Naturally muzzle first, right. How do you store it? Naturally muzzle away from you. How do you transition a long gun from the muzzle pointing away from you to leading you out of the vehicle? Not to easily accomplished unless it’s a short shotty with a pistol grip.

TO ME, if You need to pull a piece then you obviously DO NOT have the jump on a perp because to warrant pulling a piece to kill with the threat has already shown itself as a threat. Simple as that.

Now should you pack a long arm as well as a CC piece on your person and some how find yourself in a shoot out, then by all means retrieve it and lay down some lead.

Hell, I’ve just about talked myself into carrying my lever action after partaking in this thread. I can get 9 flat nose in the 8 round tube of my .44 carbine. A well placed .44 from a long arm can take 99.9% of the airbreathers on this side of the planet.

I think we are viewing this from different perspectives, which is fine. Like I said, you have to dress for the occasion or the situation you may come into contact with.

I am not referring to a rifle in a vehicle as something you deploy from within your vehicle or even immediately. If you have the ability, a pistol will cover 99% of your PP situations and is much easier to manipulate from with a vehicle. you will likely never need to access anything else, if you are the immediate target.

Now, if you are not the immediate target and have the opportunity to retrieve a rifle from your vehicle in order to create a more accuracy and distance, when both are to your benefit, then do so. I have seen this a lot on Social media lately where an individual is moving from one location within a vehicle to retrieve another. They get ridiculed for “never having the opportunity to get out of the vehicle.” That is very true, IF you’re the immediate target.

Now i realize that Social Media is no place to retrieve training techniques and is solely a place for people to show how cool they think they are. I’m just trying to draw a common situation so we are on the same page. I don’t think we are far from it.

Now when you talk about bringing a lever action rifle to a gun fight, you loose me. You’re simply trying to create an offset of a big bullet with low round count. That may work well for your location and environment, but would do very little in an urban environment.

Points taken. I'm looking at the entire situation as a whole and I am going for a long arm to now be the aggressor. Going for the long arm to quell a perp(s). Therefore not using my vehicle as a barrier and using the lever to it's potential. I'm also not wanting to spray and pray a 30 round mag but to put calculated shots down range with intent. Don't dis a levergun until you've played with one. They tamed the wild west in a .30cal and in the right hands crazy accurate.

But I'll be sticking with my xd45 and g22 for now.

Word to the wise: Anyone choosing to store a gun in a vehicle should think twice about the stickers (hunting, guns, 2nd amendment, etc.) they place on that vehicle. Its a fact that pickups in general are targeted for break-ins because its understood by criminals that most people that like trucks also like guns. When I worked in a major city I was staying in a hotel for a few months that the company put us up in, one night a number of pickups got broken in to, the cops later informed all of us that the local gangs target pickup trucks in that city because they know trucks usually = guns.

MP5 or a 10.5" SBR tuck perfectly between the driver leg and the center console. The SBR you can wedge the mag in the seat gap and it stays put super well.

    Just sayin...

So by your account SWAT, military, personal protection, etc should be using a lever gun versus a 30 rd mag?
Secret Service uses the HK PS90, which is concealable under a sport jacket, 50 rounds and either semi or full auto. I have one. Not advocating full auto to shoot anything.... bad choice in most situations.
And again under duress, adrenalin pumping and all the other physical things that happen, tunnel vision etc, which greatly reduces accuracy even more so with with multiple targets.....
    Nope.

I have a pistol in my truck, but it's only for situations I can't get out of. You are much better off driving smart, leaving yourself means to escape (even at red lights and in traffic), and getting the heck away from a threat than defending yourself from a vehicle. And most of your truck will not stop a bullet.

I hold all 3 Texas security officer licenses and am an NRA pistol instructor, but I would always rather drive away than get in a gunfight from my vehicle.

I keep my carry in the cup holder, it's quick to get just in-case ..
Seems pretty secured in it, some kid on his phone going about 40mph rear ended me and to my surprise the gun didn't go flying but it stayed in place ..
My P938 came with a holster that I secure it with in the cup holder …
Yes I take it out when leaving the truck lol.

When I carry, which I can’t do daily to and from work, federal facilities, I keep either a Walther CCP 9mm or a Kel-tec PF9 w/extended mag, which gives me 9 rnds., up in/on the center console cubby hole area where the battery charging ‘plate’ is on my 2017 TRD.
And I always carry with a rnd. in the chamber. If that bad day comes, I have immediate access, Walther a flip of the safety, Kel-tec no safety, just a longer trigger pull.
You should always keep one in the chamber, train, muscle memory. Under duress, adrenalin pumping, having to pull your weapon and then rack a round, and then get on-target, not good if a bad day is happening.
Just got the Kel-tec PF9 a few months ago. Super light and slim. Added a Hogue rubber grip to give me a little more of a grip. Not really that comfortable to shoot, but I don’t use it as a range gun, other than to shoot a few rnds. to practice putting holes in paper...it’s pretty much my daily carry now, when not going to/from work.
    https://www.keltecweapons.com/pistols/pf-9

When I take longer trips, vacation, like out to west Texas, near the border with Mex, Big Bend/Terlingua area, i.e. out in the middle of nowhere, I also bring along a FN PS-90, 50 rnds.....same weapon Secret Service uses(they typically use the shorter barrel version).
Sweet gun, looks ugly but ergonomically great, comfortable to shoot, kicks like a 22, nada...
