    +1

And for reference that +30 miles is on medium power with a Kenwood V71a. But I've also used and HT with a mag mount in the woods and the results are as expected. Better than cb, not as much range as a mobile.

30 miles is good, but Voyager 1 still has the record - 11.7 billion miles from Earth and can still be heard with its 23 watt radio. It’s all in the antenna...

I expect them not to run around snitching on their fellow countryman over trival shit. Reminds me of the lady a few weeks ago that called the cops on the little girl selling ice cream. Maybe she was just bored too so I guess its all cool.

Im happy they do, else Ham bands will sound like CB. Hams are good people and take care of their own house. Same with TW, some moderation is a good thing. 73’s :)

To me they sound like the type of people that would rat their own mother out for a happy meal. Who the hell runs around trying to triangulate someone's position so they can report them to the "authorities" for not having the proper license. I guess thats what weve become though a nation of rats and the tools that support them.

Haha what are you talking about.

Damn rules. Damn people getting upset about a little interference! *Shakes fist at air*

$15 and a test squares you away for 10 years and you'll actually have a clue what you're doing. Unless you're too cool for school. That view is entitlement at best.

So I assume you contacted the manufacturer as the link you "googled" does not allow shipping to the US, and if that is the case what was the shipping cost?

I run GMRS in my truck. Lots of guys I off road with have CB radios, but most run cheap FRS radios to keep in touch with other rigs. A few run GMRS, and I like that I can have comms with FRS and GMRS with one simple radio. I have the small 5 watt from Midland and have gotten close to 5 mile range out of it. Really all I need. And I am happy with it. I think most of it boils down to preference. Yeah, you have to pay for a license - but 70 bucks for 10 years and license extends to all immediate family members.

I ordered direct from their website and they did ship to the US: https://www.gear-electric.com.au/toyota-uhf-rj45-blanks

    Wasn't cheap though, I spent AU$21 (looks like it's now AU$26) + AU$35 for shipping. = ~US$41

You have to continuously transmit. It's not that easy to find someone and most people do it for fun not to find abusers of the systems. The game being finding someone you know.

Got my installed, now I need somebody to talk to. I opted for a less than stealth install because I like the looks of the equipment. Plan to install my new CB (Uniden CMX760) on the passenger side exactly the same way. Both mics come out easily and will store in the center console until needed. The unit does not interfere with my legs in any way. I might install an external speaker and tie both units into it if I find the built-in speakers too quiet as others have mentioned. I really like the handheld controls.

I would rely on CB and HAM as a primary more than GMRS.

a Ham license is only $15 and 2hrs of studying.........where as a GMRS license is currently $70 i believe, but no studying (not that anyone ever buys a GMRS license).

the problem with both CB and GMRS is range.....youre talking about <10 Miles for both on a good setup........<3 Miles if you are using handy-talkies....

where as HAM will easily reach 20+ miles on a HT and closer to 50Miles with a mobile or base station.......and even further if you have a repeater near by.

the Benefit CB has is users.......everyone and their mother has a CB radio......every trucker and damn near every off roader has a CB radio......not many have HAM, and slightly more have cheap GMRS radios kicking around.

what i do is have a CB as my main vehicle mounted radio......and i keep a HAM radio HT capable of transmitting on 2M and 70CM ham bands.....and it will also transmit on FRS, GMRS, and MURS bands as well.

honestly the only time people really spend the effort to track someone down is if they are being a dumbass and jamming frequency bands, or interfering with repeater operations or otherwise being a dick.

ive heard many unlicensed users on HAM bands and so long as they arent bothering anyone, no one really bats and eye.

It looked like a pita to enter the grms/frs channel frequencies into the ham.

I have a cheap baofeng that I ride with just for emergency use but not knowing what frequency to tune to or having a license doesn't help much. I need to get on it.

Ultimately the ACR plb's are the best for emergencies but I've been considering the garmin in-reach for non life threatening emergencies. They're supposed to be a lot better than the spot.

Awesome, I have a buddy that lives down there, and is looking into hooking me up with some. I have a second gen and had hoped to use this insert for the middle console below the HVAC controls, do you believe this is the same size?

its not too bad...each GMRS/ FRS "channel" corresponds to a frequency.....simply dial the frequency on your baofeng just like you would a phone number and you are talking on that FRS/GMRS channel.

example.....you have a buddy whos using a hand held GMRS radio on channel 1........you just dial 462.5625 on your baofeng and you can talk to him no problem.

what i do is pre-program them as preset channels in the radio, so i dont have to remember each frequency.
