Hey everyone, just got a 2017 v6 trd a few weeks ago. A friend just got a new 5.7L Tundra and took out the charcoal filter and says he notices about 3 more mpg's now.

    A few questions:
Does anyone have recent updates on the removal of the filter on 2016-2017 V6 Tacomas? Does it improve anything? Does it void the warranty? Lastly, where the heck is the filter?

    Thanks!

Sorry man. Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. I've done it on previous Toyota trucks and the difference isn't really noticeable in either fuel economy or power.

Your friend is either embellishing or didn't measure fuel consumption correctly. All the aero bits introduced on 2016 Tacos (ugly air dam, cab-bed fairing, tailgate lip) together may be worth 1 mpg. Toyota would kill for 3 mpg.

Anyway, the charcoal filter is usually next to the air filter in the air filter housing. Have you looked there?

Thanks I'll take another look, I sure missed it.

I agree, my buddy probably exaggerated. He loves his Tundra but hates the MPGs. I wouldn't mind taking off the filter if I could get even half a mile more, but everything I've read is contradictory.

Liars, it never has helped anyone's mpg. Waste of time.

So after a few years I have not seen a definitive answer...

Are the benefits of the charcoal filter removal still considered a myth?

I recently removed my filter and could tell that the truck does idle smoother (at least to me it does). But other than that I have seen no MPG difference and no power increase.

Oh... We thought you were going to do it and report back with the results.

Well the overwhelming response two years ago, to whether taking them off was beneficial, was negative. So I never did.

Now I'm just wondering since it's been a good while since we've had these 3rd gens out on the road.

A couple of people in the OVTune alpha thread mentioned doing this, but noted minimal gains if any.

    Strictly talking MPG.

The throttle plate is the biggest restriction on the intake path. Without restriction your engine wants to redline. Under anything less than full throttle the air filter/carbon filter just isn't a restriction vs the throttle. If there is restriction caused by the air filter or carbon filter it adjusts the throttle to make up for it. Cruising down the road at posted speed limit doesn't take much throttle opening.
