I recently took my new-to-me Taco TRD Off Road 2wd to Pismo Beach and had to learn the hard way of how not to get stuck in soft sand. I started at about 18 psi and was doing fine in the packed/wet sand, but once I hit softer ground I almost immediately got stuck...twice!

On the first incident, I dug myself deeper and deeper and needed to get pulled out. Embarrassing. Once I was free, the tow rig drove off and I got stuck again! This time I dropped my pressure to about 10psi and we were able to push the truck out before I dig myself in too deep. Good times nonetheless! Loved driving trough the water!

 I learned my lesson with my last prerunner never to buy 2WD again. For sand, the key is low PSI and momentum momentum momentum. Oh and kick on that rear locker, it’ll help a ton. Also once you do get stuck, don’t gas it. You only dig yourself in deeper. It’s best to just accept defeat and get the shovel/traction boards out once you lose momentum. Glad you still had fun man. That’s what counts.

A 4x4 would have definitely helped, but who needs it when you have 4 guys pushing me out haha!

Yes it is an off-road and I had the rear locker on, but with both wheels spinning, it just dug me deeper in both sides. After I finally cleared the 2nd time and dropped to about 8-10psi I didn’t get stuck again.

Now what would someone in central Michigan know about 'sea water'? :)cheers:just ribbing you a bit). Here in northeastern NC, our best offroading option is the Outer Banks. The shot below was taken on Portsmouth Island while crossing the slough from the beach to the Village. The water is actually more brackish than salty although its still a good idea to give everything a thorough pressure wash when you get back home. The Tacoma is doing fine but I've not seen the Frontier or Land Rover since this particular trip.

10psi is about as low as you'd want to go. Lower and you start blowing beads.

If you plan to spend a lot of time in the sand, get some traction aides. You don't need those super expensive orange plastic ones all the bros have on their shiny rigs, old rubber floor mats or 2x8's with lug bolts screwed in to it work really well too.

4x4 is hardly necessary for sand, but it does cause you to need to drive a bit differently. Think about different tires, too. Since you need more momentum with driving sand in 2wd, might think about some upgraded shocks, too...

So why are you talking about how well your 4x4 sport would handle it?

It happens man. I'm out there often enough to say that if you don't air down you will probably get stuck. I'm running almost bald stock TRD Sport tires (Highway tires) and once aired down to about 10 psi I have no issues whatsoever.
