So all this talk about radios has me wondering what cops use. My friend is a state trooper and last time he was in Huntsville I watched him radio his dispatch in Montgomery.

 

They use a trunked system, with repeaters and probably land line sections.

Very different (and expensive) than anything available to non-commercial users.

 

Public safety uses a variety of radios. Some still use VHF, we use Digital UHF which is encrypted, there's 800mhz (plain and digital) and some agencies use a 1800-1900mhz radios.

Our main radios for dispatch are Digital UHF and the other radio we have is VHF for communications with the hospitals and helicopters (medevac's).

They have also implemented a way for us to call a phone number on our cell phones to connect with the radios at the hospitals.

According to the site that linked it, if you study this for a couple hours a night for a week or so, you'll most likely be good to go.

Now y'all got me interested in finding one that does HF too, so I can listen to HSV tower. Always really needed a backup for in the air too, but I haven't flown in years anyway...
Had a couple fighter jets buzz my house in a few weeks ago on downwind to 18L. Would have been fun to hear that coming to watch more than the last one vanish over the trees

If nothing else the book will be an excellent reference down the road. Studying the question bank is probably most efficient to get the license though haha.

 

Agreed. It has the questions for the current bank but I think that changes soon doesn't it?
