I just run the Valvoline Synthetic oil. Good price at most automotive stores and the Blackstone Lab report shows it’s working great. Viscosity holds up over 5-6 thousand miles and Flashpoint remains high after that mileage.

I will, when my first oil change comes up. Only got my 2017 (new) this last Jan 18. As of today have only 1100 miles on it, and it is my only vehicle. I have used Red Line for years in my other vehicles with fine results. When others dropped their levels of ZDDP, Red Line refused showing its benefits. Red Line was a "high mileage change" oil before it was an industry cool thing to advertise. I have never gone through the expense or trouble of having the old oil analysed (sic), but have relied on other's reports. Yes, it is pricey, but I feel worth it in a vehicle that I hope to keep for many years. Red Line isn't as big as Pennzoil or Valvoline, nor have their advertising budgets, but they have lab tests, race tracks, and chemistry (Group V). I intend to switch out my ATF and differential lube to Red Line also. Do I dare add that I also spend about $12 on what I (and others) consider the best oil filter - the Purolator BOSS.

If you want to go boutique, Redline or Amsoil. Either is top notch and probably the best there is. I use Amsoil Signature 10-30 in my 2.7. I also use Amsoil in everything else from diffs to tranny to transfer case.

I'm a fan of Amsoil synthetic in manual transmissions but use conventional oil in everything else.

The only advantage I can see to running synthetic oil in an engine is longer oil change intervals.

been using redline mt since 90k, now I'm at 113k and it seems to be just fine. TBH didn't feel like much of a difference except for the money leaving the wallet

Don't waste your money. Mobil 1 is $2 / quart after rebate.

Okay, you chose a highly advertised oil. I chose an oil that is at the top rung of all oils; a Group V synthetic, which Mobil is not. Red Line, with its "extra" ZDDP and it's extreme top level of oil base surpasses all others. Everything depends on do you want the best, for a long life, extreme lubrication under all conditions, or do you want something advertised on TV and magazines. Isn't it great to have a choice!

I choose the cheapest I can find. Just get the correct viscosity. Btw I'm doing 12,500 mile oci too! Crazy right?

Sounds like you are falling for some advertising yourself! Ha

Nope, just lab results, race tracks, chemical makeup; stuff like that.

The other advantage is that 100% synthetic engine oils are far superior in very extreme conditions as in arctic cold, extreme heat and industrial/commercial use. They flow FAR better when it gets downright cold and excel when it's 110 degrees at high rpm or heavy loads. I'd bet there isn't a race team on the planet that isn't running full synthetics at this point in time. No matter where they race on the planet. I don't follow racing at all so that's just a guess but I'd bet I'm right. In addition to longer change intervals 100% synthetic oil is far better than dino. If you live where the temp never gets below 30 degrees and never above 90 degrees then dino is just fine and you change it more often. In the extreme temps 100% synthetic rules. Pennzoil Platinum is the only off the shelf 100% pure synthetic that I know off. The rest are all blends and work fabulously for engines operating in "normal" conditions.

You have to go boutique if you want a true synthetic besides Penzoil Platinum which is a DAMN good oil for the average person.

I use Mobil-1 in everything; 5W-40 TDT. '08 Tacoma 2.7L 4x4, '15 Super Duty Diesel 4x4, '15 Subaru Forester Turbo, '49 Dodge 3/4 ton & '51 Plymouth. The old Camry v6 has 340,000 miles & still uses no oil (and it does not get babied). We live in a rural, very dusty environment. Factory air filters, Wix or Baldwin oil filters. The old Camry gets synthetic Dexron; SD & Turbo factory ATF & Tacoma Redline GL-4 75W-90. Air filters & cabin air filters are changed at half the factory intervals due to the dust. As evidenced by the Camry, this works for me...can't beat Mobil-1 engine oil!

Mobil 1 is a good oil, no doubt. But for Red Line oil users we consider its class of synthetics. Red Line is a Group V, which Mobil 1 is not. Overkill? Possibly. But for those of us who bought what we thought were the best vehicles, why not use the best (that is proven it so, not by advertising, but by racing, and lab tests.).

Heard decent concentrations of lead were found in oil samples of redline engine oil on some other forum. Don't remember what viscosity or if this anything to be alarmed about.

Lead (in moderation) is a good lubricant additive. That's why it used to be blended into gasoline...to lubricate valve seats. That said, I don't use Redline engine oil in my Taco. I change it too often. I buy whatever synthetic is on sale at the time...usually Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. I use Redline engine oil in my Mustang (5W30).

I do use Redline in the Taco for the transfer case (MTL) and front/rear Differentials (75W85).

There was a guy on a corvette forum who was reporting higher than normal lead using redline 5w30 for 2 3-4km oci's in a z06. He went to a different oil but changed to a higher viscosity as well. Would have been smarter to switch brands but keep the same 5w30 viscosity to prove if the oil was the culprit or not.

    Edit

Did some research. Redline oil tends to give false increase readings for wear metals in oil sample analysis for the first 1-2 OCIs (lead, iron, etc). This is considered normal and caused by the additives in the oil cleaning oxides and varnish from the engine components and replacing older oil film with its own protective ingredients. Redline shows its value in racing applications and might be overkill for daily driver pickups but it should be perfectly fine for use in your pickup. Some people even report increased MPGs and no problems running it through their vehicles for hundreds of thousands of miles.
