    Hey all,

Don’t know if that has been gone over before but I just recently discovered a do it yourself powder coating kit and wanted to share it with you guys since I get a lot of helpful information from this forum. If this helps a single person then it’s worth it to me. Back in the day Craftsman use to sell an electric Powder Coating spray gun kit. It’s esentially a blow dryer with a ground you connect to the item your coating and a built in canister to hold the powder. You can get them on eBay now. I got mine locally for $20, kit was still new in box, unopened. The powder can be bought at local Harbor Frieghts for about $6.99 for an entire pound. Plus you can use the digital 20% coupon to get it even cheaper. As far as prepping goes, you can go in as deep as you like.

I do things in a simple way, knowing more then likely I’ll have to redo it in the future but I don’t mind as most items I coat will take a beating anyway (truck parts and dirt bike parts). I simply get a scrubbing pad and degreaser and wash the item I’m going to coat. Nothing fancy. Then I heat it up with a toaster oven on low for like 3 minutes to make it just barely hot to touch to take powder easier. Then I spray the item. To cure it, 25 minutes in the toaster oven at 400 degrees. Then let it cool down before handling.

I don’t have a fancy workstation, I hang stuff off a ladder in a spot in backyard grass where the dog craps and the grass never grows. Spilt powder is easily shop vac’d, or washed away. My toaster oven I’ve had for years I got on sale for like $15, only use it for crafts/projects. All my prep stuff I got at the dollar tree.

Here are some picture of my axe/shovel mounts I did as well as my exhaust tip. The wife is already asking me to redo some yard lighting housings and other stuff. I’m trying to convince her to let me get a throw down oven for the backyard so I can do my wheels....it’s a firm no for now...but I’ll keep trying.

If you guys have done your own coating too, post up pictures and show those pieces off! If there are any questions, just ask.

I’m an idiot when it comes to most tasks but even I found this to be quite simple. From prep to completely done, its less than an hour and that includes watching an episode of your favorite show while your item is baking. The hardest part is learning to not touch and smear the powder when move the item into the oven  Trick is to grab it by the little hook it’s hanging on and never touch the item at all. If you do accidentally grab and smear something, you bust out the hose rinse item off and do it again, just a few minute set back.

If you search some YouTube videos of the kit, you’ll see how super easy this is. Post up pictures when your done!
