It is this exact problem that is holding be back from buying the map lights. I have your luck too.

Hope all works out this time for you.

I tried to change the bulbs without pulling the panel out for 10 min and the said f-it .
do you know it only takes 20 seconds to pull it out ? and 10 more to unplug it ?
and then it 30 seconds to pop out and put it the new led bulb ...
SO just start from a corner and pull down and pop its loose . iv had mine out a half a dozen times, to mod things up there, and everything is tight and fine (just like the wife .. um.... said it would be)
    sorry you cooked the board

Yeah I’m deeply acquainted with that damn console now - once I thought to myself “hey, I bet that thing comes out” the whole world opened up. What else do you have modded up there? If I’m going to have to replace the console, might as well make it better. :)

Sorry to hear about this. Did you remove the battery terminals before attempting to install the maps?
I would have suggested to leave the batter disconnected to see if it resets the computer system... but seems you have already taken it to the dealer and found other issues.
I don’t think the light itself could cause the issue.my only guess would be during install when trying to plug in the bulb adapter (little tricky without taking the console down because you have to reach up in he hole) and maybe touched bother terminals in the overhead console contacts. Again.. just a guess. But this is why I always suggest to disconnect battery before

I disconnected the battery before installing, but I originally tried to pull the bulbs with the truck just off. I’m betting you’re correct - that I shorted the panel when I was arguing with the original bulbs. Appreciate the kind words, it’ll turn out fine.

I didn’t realize you were a local Huntsville resident, you could have swung by my house and I would’ve helped you troubleshoot the problem, if you get in a pinch like this again feel free to reach out to me, always willing to lend a hand.

Will do, and vice versa if you need grunt labor or a rubber duck. This truck is my first foray into hands-on mods, so I probably should grab a case of your favorite beer to keep on hand. :D

I’ve lived in Ashbury Woods and Belltower, moved to Madison proper a couple off years ago. Still use gate 7 to get on campus every morning. :) definitely will look you up.

Well it started out to get power for my radar detector (tapped mirror power) Then added 3amp power to the gopro / Rexing V1 3rd Generation 4K WiFi Car Dash- Then needed a spot to add my navigation override and backup cam anytime mod buttons,
i ended up pulling power from the cigarette lighter wire and ran it up the pillar , so I've had it out a few times over the last 2 years.

Ok, time to end the story. The overhead panel was indeed blown, for a total of about $150 I got a new one and swapped it in (took about 30 seconds). Haven’t taken the time to inspect the map lights, been busy getting the truck ready for its inaugural camping trip.

A couple bright spots - now I know where to get the damn fasteners, and now I know that there’s a service tech at Serra Toyota that’s worth the drive from Huntsville to talk to.

    ...and so endeth the lesson.

I just took my truck in to Bill Penney in Huntsville for it’s 5,000 mile service and when setting up the appointment specifically mentioned the rear end howl problem when accelerating at certain speeds, they didn’t even look at the problem, just did the basic fluid top offs and rotated the tires. I bought my truck at Serra in Birmingham. Not too impressed with Bill Penney so far. Glad you got your problem fixed with the overhead console.

I went to Decatur, couldn’t even get Bill Penney to respond to my phone messages. The guy who helped me is on TW, apparently, but hasn’t made himself known to me yet. I’ll PM you his name if you want.

So for us who have not done the mod yet how can we avoid blowing our panel?

I am not a mechanic. I am not qualified to give you advice. However.

I pulled the panel, grabbed a grounding strap, very very carefully installed the new lights, then reinstalled the panel. Everything works just fine. I’m going to guess I was a dumbass and did something klutzy on initial install.

    Nice disclaimer but unneeded.

Just looking to see if you knew what caused the initial problem.

Not looking to put blame on someone if I screw up.

    Thanks

It's not that hard, take a piece of scotch tape pinch it on stock map bulb and pull it out! Insert Meso's adapter into light socket snap led cover into place and done! Oh and check polarity before snapping led cover in.
