My buddy shows up this morning with his 02 and wants help with getting his 5100 coil overs installed. So we start and find his left lower strut mount destroyed. It took us over an hour to just get the lower bolt removed. It was fused into the two smashed steel bushings. Bolt had locked itself in the broken strut. After it was finally removed we had to fabricate a new mount.
Finally got it made and welded in place, New shock installed. So now the Tundra is rockin Bilsteins. He's Staying away from 2.0 Sway-Away coil overs.. Took us the good part of the day dealing with it.. IMG_3457.jpg IMG_3445 (1).jpg IMG_3447.jpg IMG_3450.jpg

Did you guys weld two washers together and turn those into a strut lower mount?

Those pictures do not indicate a coilover failure, or even a lower eyelet failure from the coilover. Those pictures indicate a control arm mount failure.

Those control arms are made of stamped steel, and that is not the first time I have seen them fail at a mounting point. They do not hold up well to heavy abuse. They have even failed from normal use before.

Yea structurally sound. Pic won't show all details.. This way he won't have to worry about having his old coil overs dropping into the street and wrecking the truck. Now he can safely drive it around till he gets new LCAs.

Yeah you could be right given that he never uses his truck off road. As you know the streets here are horrid. Plus the shocks lower mount design puts to much stress on that thin LCR point's steel.

I put some sways on my titan but before I did I welded in new 1/4" tabs. OEM stuff is so thin I don't trust it

Haha j/k, I couldn't resist, I have no experience with SAWs. My buddy has em on his Tundra & haven't heard any issues with his.

Good job on the fix to get him back on the road.

Yeah the metal on the control arms is very thin and aftermarket coilovers use some very stout materials. The streets out here are absolutely vicious on vehicles. I'm surprised more don't break and bend suspension parts from all the potholes.
