Hey TW, looking for a little advice/wisdom.

    I’m considering selling my 2005 DCSB 6spd TRD sport and buying a 2012 DCLB 5A SR5.

    My 2005:
    - 285,000km (177,000mi)
    - has a new frame and has basically been rebuilt, most major components have been replaced, the only thing that hasn’t had any major work done to it is the engine.
    - Has a cracked bumper, and the drivers rear door has been repainted but doesn’t quite match perfectly so would need a repaint.
    - Realistically I could probably get 15k CANADIAN for the truck

    The 2012:
    - 160,000km (100,000mi)
    - Everything on it looks good except it needs new brake pads/rotors and spark plugs
    - He wants 21k CANADIAN for the truck

The reasons I want to upgrade:
    - I’d rather have the automatic
    - I prefer the new grille/steering wheel
    - It’s a long bed

Reasons I don’t want to upgrade:
    - I’m worried a few years down the road I’ll have to replace the same major components I have already on my ‘05
    - The ride/handling may be slightly better on my current trd sport (also the hood scoop, seats)

Is it worth the extra 5-6k?

unless you really want the 5spd auto. Id keep your current truck that you know whats been done to and has been driven less miles per year.

You won’t really find any significant upgrades besides the cosmetics you noted on the 2012. If you for some reason really really wanted an auto and a longer bed to use very frequently then it could make sense.

2012s have the stupid smog pump failure issue, which is covered now for certain period of time or whatever by Toyota, I’m assuming in Canada as well.

So if you are looking to “upgrade”, I would either shoot for a lower miles 2015 if the prices are satisfactory, or just keep what you got.

I’d keep what you got. You’ve already done all the major things to it an have her a new lease on life. Not wanting to dig into your financial situation if it’s paid off there is a lot to be said for that, where as if you were to finance the newer truck you’d have that payment an still have to maintain it.
If it’s paid off take that money an mod it!! You can fit a lot in the SB if your a Tetris master also but a trailer is a lot cheaper than a new truck.

I upgraded from a 1998 to a 2013, thought I was doing good. Now that it's too late, I wish I'd have kept the 1998. Just my feelings.

Keep what you have. You’d be trading one high mileage vehicle for another high mileage vehicle. Yes 100000 miles is considered high mileage. I know Tacoma’s are vehicles that can generally run for hundreds of thousands of miles but there are no guarantees. You could be getting something with all kinds of potential problems.

The secondary air injection system is a pain in the ass. And it’s worse in the 2012 model. I vote no.

C'mon guys. He should do it. The hood scoop alone adds an extra 50hp and he'll be able to finally achieve performing a 2nd gear scratch.

    Sell it.

2005 has much higher incidence of headgasket problems. 6 speed trans is eventually going to need syncros rebuilt.

I believe there's a way to head off the smog pump issue on the 2012 before it breaks. (Filter replacement?)

If you're tired of shifting gears and want a long bed, then there you go.

That much more truck for only $6k???? 7 years newer and 80k less miles, for only $6k?

    I have a 2005 4cyl, 4x4 5spd w/145k. If I could get a 2012 w/65k for only $6k more, I'd be all over it.
This is the exact upgrade that I would jump on, and I do frequently.

This is the typical life of the typical automobile owner - when their current car starts needing a few too many repairs, they roll-in some cash, and buy something newer.

This being said, I feel $15k is optimistic for your truck, and a lower sale price would affect my argument above, but sticking with $6k delta, that's a no brainer IMO.
Of course DMV fees and taxes play a role, likely adds $1500.

Pretty sure he's talking about Canadian dollars. I still remember the 1st time buying gas in Canada. Canadian dollars per liter. Hhhhmmm? I wonder how that compares.

Think about your money situation? Some think you always have to have a payment, you don't. It's amazing how much more fun they are to drive without a payment, even if they aren't as new & shiny. If you can discipline yourself, you can pay cash for the next one, It's amazing how much cheeeper they are without interest.

I’m talking about Canadian dollars yes, and the 2012 does seem like a pretty good deal for 21k. But, I’ve had my entire transmission rebuilt already so it shifts perfectly, I just had a new driveshaft and frame installed by Toyota for free, and I don’t seem to be having head gasket issues (yet) though I see it is a common problem. With the amount of work I’ve done to my truck it’s basically new, and if a couple years down the road it needs a new head gasket then I’ll toy with the idea of an engine overhaul considering everything is new in the truck already. I don’t think it’s time to get rid of my baby just yet, but I am test driving the 2012 this weekend just to see if I’m missing out on a lot more. Also my current truck is paid off and I’d pay cash for the newer one if I did sell.

    https://www.kbb.com/toyota/tacoma-d...3|true|67848|true|6347523|true&condition=good

KBB puts the value of your truck in the 8-10k range. That is with me assigning it the "good" rating for condition. With a cracked bumper and a mismatch painted door, every dealer and prospective buyer with a reasonable rating guideline would place your truck in the "fair" category. Either way, you're thinking some sucker is going to pay you a minimum of $5000 more for your truck than what it is worth.

You'll be angry with me for this post but if this was a dealer trying to ask this price for this vehicle on their lot, you all would call them all kinds of profanities for doing so.

If you can get someone to pay you $15k for it, then I would take that in a heartbeat! Doesn't matter what you turn around and buy afterwards.

I should have mentioned initially that my value is in Canadian dollars. $10,000USD equates to roughly $13,000CAD. I was also going by the demand for Tacomas in my area. Another guy nearby has posted his ‘06 DCSB 6M with 10,000 less miles for 20k CAD without many of the new OEM parts I’ve installed, albeit with a 3 inch lift and mud tires. I bet he’ll get 17.5k when it’s all said and done. 15k didn’t sound too unrealistic to me considering the bumper and door need to be redone.

I didn't realize it was CAD. I stand corrected. Good luck with sale/purchase if you decide to go for it!
