Mod's include-- ONE upper left ball joint replacement, many mufflers, lots of tires and oil changes. ALL ORIGINAL. Owned for 13 years now.........
To get hi/lo range in the 2001, from what I have learned on this site so far: I CAN(?) get a 1995-2004 manual transmission Transfer case (like one one ebay for 175 bucks) and it will mate right up to my w59-5 speed manual trans?
--I will have to create a new crossmember to support the transfer case--shouldn't be too bad. (all electrical connections would be ignored/abandoned on the transfer case).
--I will have to cut a hole thru a cup holder and cab floor in the cab for the shifter to pop up thru
--I will have to get a 4x4 rear drive shaft and cut it in half, join it with my original 4x2 driveshaft (Pay shop to weld the shafts together properly).

Is that it? Can I do this? Will the fuel tank be in the way of the transfer case?
Can I get a cross member with a junkyard transfer case and drill/bolt it on my frame?

This is a farm use situation, but if it works well, I'd do it to my 02 that only has 89K miles on it. Backing trailers would be so much slower, safer, and easier on the clutch, hauling loads up hills without needing a "run for it", I could creep up gently instead. This could be nice and unique.

Uh yeah it’s possible but why. You can just throw skme super tall gears in and a locker and achieve the same for less, only problem is you woll probably be limited to like 55 mph

I think the work involved in this requires precision, experience, and lots of time compared to my hack/chop/bolt in idea above. Transfer cases are going for 175-250 around here (175 free shipping on ebay right now), plus driveshaft for 50. The spartan locker on rock auto for the rear end is 300 ish I think, and the gear/pinion is another 200, so I am doing the cheap route................. PLUS--I would have my normal 105MPH in 4th gear and fast reverse for mud and getting a run on it, and still have low range. Doing the differential will make reverse (and rocking back and fourth when stuck) almost irrelevant. Unfortunately.........

You can get a built 3rd from ecgs for 800$ and have it swapped out in a few hours with no modifications.

Another problem with a t case is it hangs low nd 5lugs are already low so you run the risk od snaging it on things.
Im not saying it can be done but its not simple and if you have the time and money to fab it all together go for it
