Long story short, my FIL is getting a divorce & the soon to be ex-MIL took a car that's solely in his name, paid a small amount remaining on the balance & then had the title mailed to her @ her new address. We're trying to figure out if she forged his name on the title to get it transferred into her name. How would I find who's the current registered owner of a vehicle?
    Thanks!

If he’s in Texas it really doesn’t matter. We are a community property state. The court will decide whos truck it is. She technically has just as much claim to it as he does.

Not when only his name is on a government issued document that she then forged to put in her name. Regardless of marriage, even in our community property state, it’s a 3rd degree felony for her to forge his name on the title.

    The dude is screwed.

Listen, as much as you hate to admit it, the law will always be on the side of the chick.

I mean, when a chick can’t afford to raise her kids she gets government assistance

When a guy can’t afford to raise his kids, he gets thrown in jail.

In a marriage, if the wife cheats, and the couple divorces the court will lean on giving her custody of children and alimony.

In a marriage, if a husband cheats, and the couple divorces, the court will lean on giving the wife custody of the children and alimony.

    That’s just how it is.

You can do a vin check. That'll show who the vehicle is currently registered to.

And that's only if she forged his name. She could easily call the loan holder and tell them they have a change of address. You could also report the vehicle stolen...

I ran the VIN thru an online website and it only showed the dealership from 2013! Probably the site I used sucked.

Thanks. It goes waaaaaay deeper than what I’ve posted. She had him admitted into the hospital, so she would have time to take $50K and move out while she had him in there. That’s just the beginning of what this bitch has done/did.

This is absolutely incorrect and ignorant of current family law statutes in most states.

    @MolonLabeTaco
Your FIL needs to consult with his attorney. Every state is different regarding property law and entitlements in a divorce.
It also depends on whos name was on the original financing as well. If she was on the lien then technically the title could be fair game.

Obviously much larger issues going on that all play into the end game. He first of all, better be hiring a lawyer, and then running all issues past them.
Theft and fraud if occurring will matter greatly to the judge assigned to the case.
Everything needs to be documented through his lawer to preserve his rights as much as possible.

Registration docs through the BMV are accessible through request by his lawyer. That will give him all copies of lien resolution documents and title transfers.

Tax accessors office or city-county will have docs showing plain ownership.

I paid $8. Going to have his attorney figure it out.
His, & only his, name was used for financing & on the title. We got him an attorney back in Feb. The attorney told me to see if I could find the info. myself, it'd save him some money. I tried & failed so now it's in the attorney's hands to determine. Thanks.

Blah blah blah.... dude, you need a reality check. I bet you’re one of those people that thinks jobs are all equal opportunity, or that every person regardless of race is treated the same. The real world is full of injustices and such.
