Let me start by saying i mean no offense to happy tundra owners. As a matter of fact, if you fit that description, you may want to ignore the rest of this post.

I just got back from a work trip to Montana. My rental was a new (2018) Tundra 4x4 double cab with a 4.Something V8. I hated this truck as much as i love my taco! Seemed very underpowered, ergonomics/interior seemed cheap and chinsey. Body (door specifically) seemed thin and flimsey.

I was not very impressed. Not that toyota was trying to impress me, just offering my $0.02. And Curious if this is typical for these?

    ...too much shit to list.
The 4.6 is pathetic compared to the 5.7 and I would agree that the 1UR-FE underpowered for a full size truck.

But get one with the 5.7 (3UR-FE) and add the supercharger...hold onto your ass. 200 more ponies than the 4.6

He's too busy thinking about adding that "high strength steel" to the Tacoma's.

The first gens with the v8 are pretty quick. You figure, they are probably a little lighter than a 3rd gen Tacoma, but with an upgraded engine. And they are beautiful might I add.

What’s the best year tundra to get? Or is it better to wait for a refresh? Asking for a friend:anonymous:.

At this point I must insist that you drive a 5.7 Tundra. It will change your opinion quickly.

Talked to a guy the other day who had a Tundy Pro and he said he wanted the super charger he was like it's only got like 385 HP. Damn 385 HP will pretty much surpass most 60s and 70s muscle cars.

04-06 have the best power to weight ratio if you get a single cab or access cab

I have a third gen Tacoma but have been looking at the first gen 05-06 Tundras with the 4.7 lately

It's basically a midsize but got an upgraded V8 with much better engine sound and good prices for low mileage(13-15k for a double cab 4wd 50-60k miles)

Had I known this, I might have heavily considered one lol

The only thing I'm not wild about with my 4.7L 2006 model is the gas mileage. There is pretty much no chance of hitting 20MPG unless I'm coasting downhill.

For whatever reason, it never got much love from the off-road tuning community, at least not like the J80's inline-6.

The 4.6 V8 would be great in the Tacoma, but it is just too small for the Tundra. The 5.7 V8 is what you want for a full-size Toyota.

I've not driven they non 5.7 but in the 2014+ the transmission and throttle mapping is less aggressive than previous gens. I can see that in combo with the smaller engine making it feel weak. You can turn on tow mode to liven it back up.
