Strut and shock recommendations?

Took the truck in for tire rotatation/balance/alignment today and noticed the alignment was way off. I do not offroad and have not hit any deep pot holes. The repair shop suggested new struts and shocks and quoted me at $750 but i know i can do it myself for less.


What brands for rear shocks and front struts do yall recommend. I was thinking of ordering from rockauto but let me know of any other trusted sites you know.

 

bilsteins seem to be the go to.

 

Should be able to do stock bilsteins yourself for like $400 or less

 

If you have the trd package go with stock bilstein 4600's, if not go with a kyb strut and shock.

 

I just did this. I bought the blisteins on Amazon for $340.

 

Do you have your numbers ??

Shocks and struts factor into alignment

I installed my new springs and struts after my alignment had it checked again spot on.

This is a trusted Shop you use all the time?

Just because they have a Alignment Rack does not mean they know how to use it.

 

Shocks and struts? Which bilstein kit should i buy for a 2003, 4wd extracab - no TRD?

 

I Personally wouldn't know what to suggest but everyone here says the blisteins

It seems the last two part numbers (for the rear) require a lift. Any idea if there's some Bilstein's that don't?

 

I saw that also, and so did my mechanic, and he said it won't make a difference. I can let you know when they come in tomorrow and I get them installed.

Yeah I got the 5100s so that i can lift the front end.

 

Front 5100's will lift your front 0-2 inches depending on how you set them up.
Rear 5100's require a 1 inch lift in the rear, could be add-a-leafs, lift shackles, blocks, whatever... DO NOT use them on sagging stock suspension. You WILL tear them up.

4600's are for stock height. This is likely what you are wanting.

 

I have an old 2001 xtra cab 4x4 TRD with no lift. I need new shocks and quick struts but I'm thinking the leaf springs are pretty saggy and need replaced as well. Any recommendations on replacement leafs?

Thanks for the info. Just ordered some 1 inch blocks and told my mechanic. He'll have to hold off til this weekend to install. Thanks for saving me a headache.

 

Think about it, they're designed for a lifted vehicle - if you run them on stock suspension, even if it's not sagged (which they likely are if your springs are original), the shocks will bottom out on big bumps. Bottom out hard enough, or often enough, and what do you think will happen?

If you're not looking for a lift, then go with the 4600's. No point going with the 5100's if you don't want a lift.

 

I wanted to level out the front on the lowest setting, but since I'll be putting the 1 inch block in the rear, I'll go ahead and have him put it on the highest setting up front.
