I put one on when I regeared/35s. I didn't have the tow package from the factory. I installed a scangauge and saw I was hitting 240 degrees on the way to Crabtree falls. I did a full trans flush and installed a cooler asap. I have always been good on changing the trans fluid 30/60/90 and 100k miles so hopefully I didn't do any permanent damage
Our trans have a trans overtemp light but I have never triggered it.

How about adding a pusher fan with a toggle switch you can cut on manually when needed? Just a thought

Possible.... I need to do more research. I'm also curious.if higher end trans oils run at lower temps i.e. amsoil

    A little a this, a little a that...
200* pulling a trailer off road wouldn’t worry me until I started getting up around 220*. Especially if you are flushing regularly. I assume you were in low range?

I’ll get into the 200s pulling long slow hills without the trailer. I have the factory aux cooler.

I believe Amsoil ATF will handle high temps well while maintaining its original properties, but it won't operate at a lower temp just because it's Amsoil. Here's what Amsoil advertises after using their ATF in a Las Vegas taxicab for 183k miles.
    https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-prod...hicle-synthetic-automatic-transmission-fluid/

Here's the full test data for details:
    https://www.amsoil.com/lit/G3118.pdf

How linear a test is from a Dodge Charger Las Vegas taxicab to a 5000lb truck hauling a trailer, I don't know. I expect a taxicab with lowspeed stop-n-go operation in traffic will have similar temps to 4lo operation.

Towing on the highway I expect a truck/trailer combo will hit higher peak temps because RPM's are higher.

Took a quick getaway to Monache Meadows, left solo but ended up camping next to some folks from San Diego as well. They included a 1970s Land Cruser (Iron Pig), Jeep and a 4Runner. Made for a fun trip and new friends.

Truck did great! Only issues what the front end is going to need some serious trimming so I had to limit my speed a bit. Didn't even have a chance to test out the lockers! But the road into the valley was a good wheeling opportunity with tight squeezes between trees, hill climbs and boulders.

Overall great weekend, awesome weather, clear star filled skies with plenty camp sites on the river. Love the bumper, the table, water can and Trash-a-roo makes everything convenient.

It's a pretty neat little unit if you're not cooking for many people.

That thing is pretty awesome. How does it do in high winds? During the winter months I like to do hot pot while camping this would be perfect do it all if I can boil water in the wok during windy conditions.

Had some fun at the sand dunes in Colorado. Also saw some great stars while we were out there.

Yea, I saw them from anywhere between $60 to $150. Mine should be arriving this Friday. Can't wait to test it out.

Earlier this month, I went to California on a 2-week expedition through the Owens Valley. (OK, so it was car camping and exploring. :))

We traveled from Jawbone Canyon to the Bristlecone Pines, stopped by Cerra Gordo and Manzanar. In all, we spent 8 days exploring the valley.

We had a great time, keeping a daily journal and taking over 1000 pictures. I also learned a lot about the history of the valley - which surprised me as years ago I lived nearby, and frequented the area.

For those interested, I have started a trip report.

Follow along and be patient - we hope to add daily updates to the report.
