    @MTgirl

    Any advice/suggestions for visiting these areas in November, specifically November 18th-20th? My wife and I are going on a 10 day cross country road trip (Georgia to Montana then South to Moab and back to Gerogia) and these are the only dates that work out for us. I have been ding research (how I found your thread) and I know Yellowstone is pretty much shutdown in November but I was hoping you may have some suggestions for us. We will be camping and have a 4x4 taco so trails would be cool also, we hope to be off pavement any chance we get. Since we were in the area we really wanted to visit Yellowstone but it doesnt seem like we will be able to do anything but drive by. Again, any suggestions/advice you can give is appreciated.

    You can still get into the park through the NW entrance at Gardiner. It will be pretty much a ghost town then (no services in the park, limited hours at the visitor center) as it is inbetween summer and winter seasons there. The park road will be open from Mammoth Hot Springs to Tower Junction and then to Cooke City in the NE corner of the park. Still worth checking things out if you have the time. The campground at Mammoth will be open as well. Or there are a few forest service/BLM camps just north of the park.
    Most forest service roads are open until 12/1 but if we get some early snow most areas will be pretty much inaccessible. And what areas are open will be overrun with hunters. Be cautious.
    Are you planning on stopping by Grand Teton as well? Got a few suggestions for you there too if you're interested. And a few cool places to check out around MT and ID on the way through. Just all depends on how much time you have and what sort of places interest you.

    I would be interested in the Grand Tetons and the other places you suggestions/cool places you alluded to. We are planning to be in the area Nov 18th-20th (Belgrade, MT, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons) but could open that up to the 22nd if I cut out some trails in Moab, our plans are pretty loose since it will all be new to us so we want to be able to say "Hey lets stay here another day or two to explore instead."

    We will be in the Yellowstone area the 3rd day of our trip. Any suggestions for BLM land where we can setup camp and enjoy the view?

    Ah, better. Cool camping just outside the park...
    Near West Yellowstone check out the Island Park/Big Springs/Henry's Lake areas in ID.
    Near Gardiner there is a few FS/BLM camps just outside of town. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd543818.pdf
    Near Cooke City check out the Daisy Lulu Loop or at the base of the Beartooth Highway (if its still open) check out camping along the road to Galcier Lake trail, shown in the first page here
    Beware - big bear country, gotta mind your P's and Q's at all times

    Thank you! I am going to read through your post to get some ideas. Def will be really cautious with the bears. Only thing concerning me right now. We will have a 6 month old with us.

    Big news here back east is a black bear has been spotted just outside of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. Behind the “Chick Fillet”.

    Well... I've only had to unholster my bear spray 3 times with the intent to possibly use it....today was one of those days.

    Was out hiking in Grand Teton earlier. Almost to the end of the trail and as I came around this slight bend in the trail I see a big furry head and ears lumbering my way about 15 yards ahead. Big black bear was walking along the trail like he owns the place. I took a couple steps back while I grabbed my spray, he was still walking at me. I started yelling as loud as I could while planning an exit route. He veered uphill into the shrubs, not in a hurry at all. I kept yelling. More hikers came up behind me and I warned them. We all started yelling and he kept going away from the trail. Thankfully it was a solo bear and not a mama bear. Definitely got my attention in a hurry though!

    For sure! Had a little extra pep in my step after that.
    amazing how quick the old brain can work in those situations...
    The other two times I had to break out the spray was for a moose and for an unseen creature which I also suspect was a moose - only heard a very disturbing grunt/groan while hiking in heavy woods. Coulda been bigfoot too I suppose...
