Show us your truck bed sleeping platform/drawer/storage systems

Are you talking about the setups that aren't the full width of the truck bed? Mine is on the passenger side to help even out weight distribution, since both the gas tank and I live on the driver's side.

Bought this off another member today. Folding sleeping platform! Pup and bike approved. Going to buy a foam sleeping pad, some battery powered lights, make some curtains and add some sheets/blankets/pillows etc. Works great if I'm traveling solo. Can store a bike in there if I leave my truck and I'll have a piece of mind. Cant wait til it all comes together!

Okay so I've read some mixed reviews on using foam pads for sleeping on. Some said that the memory foam ones would freeze, and that the regular foam pads would compress quickly and you would be sleeping on the "floor". What's everybody else's opinion? My set up would only be used for two nights in a row max

 

An air mattress is the best insulator and will pack smaller and lighter. Regular foam comes in different densities and won't freeze(unless it gets wet) but it's a good idea to encase it since it's easier to wash a cover than the foam.

 

Memory Foam doesn't freeze, but it gets really stiff when cold. Your body heat will soften it back up... eventually. But if you're insulated (like in a sleeping bag) that can take a long time.

 

I heard air mattresses suck heat away from you? Plus it would take up a bit too much room

 

Air mattress always seem to deflate on me overnight. I've had good luck with the self inflating kind that have the foam inside.

 

I'm starting to mess around with some ideas for a solo sleeping platform. Trying to keep it relatively light so it can be removed and stored when not in use.

 

I bought a 2” (I think) air mattress. One of those self inflating ones. It’s a double and it fits perfect on a sleeping platform in the bed of my ACLB. I’ll see if I can find the link when I bought it. I think the brand was Winterial.


Edit: here’s the one I have. Rolls up nicely. I’m building a set of drawers and a new platform for my truck. This will stay in the “gear” drawer all the time so i won’t have to worry about forgetting it.

For those worried about the cold. I was sleeping in the back of mine last winter on a night that got to -10F. I did not have window covers. But layering made all the difference. I had just picked up this cot for $5 from a Goodwill like shop in town:

It should be noted, that this was too long by maybe 3". So the end at the tailgate rested on the tailgate, so I was at an incline. I didn't care. This was a one night trial.

On top of that cot I had a 2" thick self-inflating bed roll like such:

On that I had a thick wool blanket I wrapped around my sleeping bag. I was toasty warm. I even kept my face out. I did have to get up to pee at one point in the night and in my struggle to get back into everything, my bedroll slide down to my feet and I didn't notice. Until I woke up teeth chattering 10 minutes later. My entire side that was on the cot/wool blanket/sleeping bag, was freezing! So lesson learned, the wool blanket and sleeping bag were not enough on their own. The 2" foam was a key insulator.

Also In my struggle to get back on the the cot at around 7am after starting coffee, I put my knee though the fabric and the whole frame bent. I am guessing this wouldn't have happened if it wasn't be supported by my tailgate on one end. Don't use that cot.

 

Yes, an air mattress without any insulation will be very cold in a few hours. The insulated kind are the way to go.
Imagine wearing a jacket that only covered the front of you.

 

Don't have any photos but my first setup was some 3/4" ply wrapped in carpet with 1/2" galvanized steel pipe legs. It was lightweight, removable, and much simpler to build than full wooden construction. Held it in place with a single ratchet strap. Had enough room on the driver's side for a bike.

 

I personally run 3" of memory foam on top of 2" of some Amazon dense foam in the back of my truck. If you get the foam a full size mattress size fits perfect in the bed of a 6' Taco. But it does get hard when cold. it will soften up from body heat but if you move around a lot while sleeping you hit hard patches.
