Don't let them stop the rental contract until you've verified 100% that every trace of the howl is gone. If you hear anything at all, tell them to keep it until they've fixed it. If you have the rental for 30 days, you might have a lemon law case.

This video was posted October 4, 2016. It literally makes me sick to my stomach that I just bought a new 2018 and have this same problem nearly two years later. And Toyota is telling me it's "normal".

My second diff is considerably louder than my first one unfortunately.

Others though seem to have had luck.

I’m going to bring the howl up again when I get my recalled A/C fan replaced. And hopefully get the latest tranny program TSB done.

2018's are included in the tsb now. Those that have had the tsb are reporting mixed results. The consensus here on TW seems to be that it makes the howl less noticeable but not totally gone.

I got the TSB on my 2018 build and in my opinion the sounds are worse than they were before the tsb. Latest word from corporate is that this is "normal".

I’ve had both the diff and rear springs changed. Still howls.

After performing TSB 0013-18, dealer road tested vehicle. Noise still present. Dealer called TAS to start case 182600104. TAS advised to use Chassis ears on both rear wheel bearings and rear diff case to confirm noise location. Confirmed noise from rear diff carrier. Drained fluid to inspect magnet on drain plug. Found material present on magnet. Replaced diff carrier. Set fluid level, bleed braking system, road test, all OK at this time.

I have put about 50 miles on the truck since the work was performed and the whine is gone. There may be more than one cause of drive train noises, but if your dealer is in denial, Find another one or call Toyota. I'm very pleased with how mine handled the problem.

I think it's possible that in some cases bad diff parts are being replaced by more bad diff parts too. It seems like the chassis ears could be used to confirm this.

Picked up my truck from the dealership today. It sounds like a new truck. No whine at all.

No prices listed on my invoice, just "N/C". I wonder if Toyota has been able to determine the differences between the 'noisy' diff carriers and the 'quiet' ones. Is metal contamination coming from the diff carrier or some other source?

If you sift through the rear end whining mega thread, there have been numerous instances where people had the whole third member replaced, reported that the noise when away and then reported that it came back.

    No, it didn’t.
No, I’ve only had the truck for a couple months and I didn’t think about it.
I’m hoping new parts since they had the truck for a week and had to order the parts.

I was glad they didn’t give me the run around and wanted to fix it. I was pretty skeptical after reading the numerous posts about how some dealerships were denying the problem exists.
