I just went and recorded several videos of my "howling" truck at different speeds and inclines. Why? I don't know yet.

I had a slight howl when I purchased the truck, never really checked to see where it was coming from, but once I put the Flowmaster 40 onto it, well... the howl is gone, to a low sounding rumble. Curious if i should make an attempt to find the howl to have it addressed incase it's a bigger issue down the road, or just leave it and hope for the best whilst my Exhaust drowns it out.

Just took mine in two weeks ago for this issue on my 2017 2WD sport. They replaced the rear differential and drive shaft. They showed me the old differential and all of the small metal chunks throughout the part.

Did it solve your howl/whine issue?

So far it has. Fingers crossed. That howl was loud and very annoying.

I see tons of slightly used 3rd gens for sale. They seem to get traded often.

I'll be getting rid of mine. Sooner than later, I hope. More mashing of gears today. Sounds like metal on metal. Just bizarre.

Today I noticed that my howl is no longer monotone. In some spots it actually goes between two "notes". Hard to explain. Rather than one long blow in a kazoo, it's more like repetitive short blows in the kazoo. Instead of a hummmmmm, it's more of a hum hum hum hum hum.

I vaguely remember reading on here a guy with a 4R getting his diffs replaced under Warranty, but llRC it had no diff fluid from the factory, ouch!

Ohhhhh, hmmm. Well, guess I'm going to have to see if I can find a way to hear it. Go pro taped under the bed tomorrow. :D

Yes, they said my differential was low on fluid when they took it out which they said also worsened the situation. Metal pieces were all in the differential itself and the drive shaft.

They kept it an extra day and drove it +/- 100 miles and re-checked fluid upon replace the diff. Flushed it out to make sure it was clean and then replenished fluids.

But even the no diff fluid issue, or even low diff fluid, is just insane. No excuse for that. I just hope that the few T4Rs that have the whine is not related to a mechanical issue. If the diffs are the same as in the Taco that means this is far less likely to be a resonance issue. If that’s the case we may all be having a different conversation in 2-3 years. I don’t want to incite a panic but I’ve had a diff seize on me (not my Taco) and it didn’t end well.

iirc, there was someone on here that had a diff lock-up on a 3rd gen. But not sure if it is related.

Tried to get some video last night and will try to get it posted soon. Mine seems to be happening now mostly around 55 (previously it was around 58-62), but it seems I may have a slight whine even under normal throttle at that speed. On my last road trip I know I heard it at higher speeds as well. Hopefully my phone picked up the sound, if not I will try again.
