Visited the recently designated national monument (2016)IMG_0322.jpg Katahdin Woods and Waters. The property is east of Baxter State Park, Maine and managed by the National Park Service. Drove the beautiful Katahdin Loop Road, which a 15 mile jaunt through deep woods on a one lane gravel road. The mostly woods travel has some sections of beautiful vistas and also a few bridges over streams. Very peaceful.

Operated my 2017 Tacoma through the area. No 4X4 required. Any vehicle with moderate clearance would work, but it is more fun in a Tacoma !

Great place to go for a ride. Our dingaling governor would prefer clear cut and tried his best to stop it.

I think the controversy regarding the area's declaration as a national monument will subside. There was also controversy
when the Cape Cod National Seashore was established; which is no longer the case.

Do you have any information on where you drove in that area? Taking a trip to Acadia around labor day and wanted to do a back road return trip so just trying to get some info from those that have gone already

The area is east of Baxter State Park. North of Millinocket. The loop road is accessed from the South Entrance via Swift Brook Road. The National Monument is new and the signage is sparse, especially on the approach to the area. Fortunately, the "Friends of Katahdin Woods and Waters" website has links to excellent directions and maps.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

I understand that this new National Monument is experiencing an increase in visitors. That's, overall, very good and will help build public support for this beautiful national treasure. So, if you don't like crowds go see the place soon !
