loud knocking at front of motor (2.7 vvt-i dohc), also it had a very loud squal when i crunk it up before i took off the vavle cover. dont know where it was coming from, thought it might have been a cam bearing. pulled vavle cover and found the top timing chain guide was grooved and eat up. the timing chain tensioner is not keeping pressure on the guide where it rides. i have not worked on any newer toyota tacomas before any suggestions would be great for taking off the timing cover and anything else that might make this easyier. thank you in advance for any helpful info i can get on this repair.

Wow, there should be a plastic backer on that. Definitely time for replacement.

Awesome CB setup, TRD leaf springs, matching camper shell...more to come some day.
What kind of oil and filters are you using....I'm trying to decide if it's really dirty or if it's just the lighting in the pic.

Got the timing done and now it sounds like a lifter or rod is knocking, what is the compression on each cylinder or any ideals on what this new issue maybe and thank everyone for their help.

LOL yes it has oil in it. There is not any blow by around the vavle hides, plenty of oil pressure so I'm checking the compression to make sure not any problems there

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? My engine has a loud knock, I'm hoping its timing chain/tensioner related but wont know until i pull it apart.

I actually thought just the opposite. I figure that engine has some miles on it and thought it looked pretty clean. I was looking for scoring on the cams, but couldn't see any. Of course, the pictures weren't taken with that in mind so it's kind of hard to tell.

That engine looks clean to me, when you consider.....
