This is mostly a duplicate from my New Member intro. I was very close to buying a new 2016 TRD off-road with the new 3.5 liter Atkinson/Otto engine and 6 speed auto transmission. I mean I have a VIN number truck due here 12/22 from the Tx plant. The driveline vibration, buzzing issue through the steering wheel and floor around 2100-2300 rpm has me to the point where I will not buy the truck until I hear a sensible explanation. My experience with my '99 has spoiled me and I have not kept up with changes since the first generation. I would appreciate any advice about the quality of the new trucks and the R &D that I have missed out on since '99. I do know there have been some driveline vibration issues in the 2nd Gen Tacomas that Toyota had difficulty admitting I think? You would think these kinds of issues would be worked out? Does anyone know of a TSB on the issue? Much thanks in advance for all the education I will get.

I don't feel any vibration in my truck and I'm OCD about rattles, squeaks and vibration. 2016 DCSB 4x4 Off Road.

So you test drove a 2016 from the dealer's lot and experienced the vibration/buzzing issue yourself?

No. I have been reading about other new owner's problems. There seems to be an increasing number of similar complaints and so far, I don't know of a TSB and fix for the issue. One man said his hands and arms get numb after a several hundred mile trip? These trucks are expensive and I don't want to buy a new one thinking I will go thru this huge hassle of denial (it is normal) with a new truck. I have a 2016 DCSB TRD off-road due here 12/22. At this point I would let someone else buy it until I hear an acknowledgment of the problem and the fix. This can't be normal. My '99 is still going strong and plan on giving to my son. I just want to think a new one was designed and built and tested correctly. Am I reading that some trucks auto trans may not be filled properly from factory and that may be issue? I always check critical fluid levels in every vehicle I buy on first day. I don't trust the human element of the PDI when all the boxes are checked perfectly and you can see no wrenches have been on a plug necessary to be removed to check fluid level (front diff for example). My main question is: Is there agreement from knowledgable Tacoma fans that the 2016s have some driveline vibration issue for which there is no Toyota fix? If so, I am not buying until resolved.

If you are considering a purchase , I am not sure what to tell you . I still believe the Tacoma is a better vehicle than any domestic , however , this is just my opinion .
Here are a couple unsolved issues with the new 2016 that may get solved ?

Lol so you want the opinion of a TW judging panel or something? The majority of 2nd gen Tacomas don't have driveline vibes even though there is a TSB for the few that do. Take a drive when the 2016 truck arrives and see if the buzz/vibration is present on that particular truck and if it's at a level that's bothersome to you.

Every truck that comes off the line is different in many ways. Your concerned about an issue you have no idea if a truck your looking to purchase is even gonna have. Go and test drive one. Take one home over night. If it isn't to your standards then simply don't buy it. If it's smooth and you like it then get it.... Yes it's that simple

You make a good point of taking the truck and driving it home to see if it has this issue, assuming they will let me. However if it is happening to a fair number of trucks there could be a fundamental design problem that will reveal itself later. I think I am going to sit tight a while and follow the issue. Have read about some other basic quality issues that concern me as well (eg. adhesive problems in hood substructure). I am wondering if buying the first year out of a new Gen truck is advisable. Maybe get some bugs worked out. $36K is too much to spend to be wondering about quality and design. My '99 has spoiled me by not having any problems. I am a huge Tacoma fan because of my experience with my '99. It has never failed me and like part of family. Been through a lot of hunting trips, building projects and family experiences. Just wanting a newer version to keep another 16 years. I am 57 and my 29 year old son will get the '99 when I buy a new one. He can't wait either. I think that is cool. This '99 will keep doing it.

I have the same buzzing/vibration issue at 2000 RPM, my is tacoma 2016 sport manual transmision. This truck run good until I hit 23000 mile then I starting to hear the noise and the vibration. I took it the the dealer and they spend 4 days to cover the noise with out fixing anything. I will have to take it back. Toyota need to fix the problem not just to cover the problem.

Describe your buzz a bit more. Where do you feel it? Steering, gas pedal, floorboard, of the above?

The 2,000 RPM buzz is a characteristic of most of these trucks from what I've seen. Some say it's engine mounts, some say other things.

I've done tons of work I shouldn't have had to getting my truck to run pretty well now. The buzzy vibration is still present at that range, but not as bad as it was before. What drastically reduced my vibes was replacing my Crankshaft Position Sensor (even though I'm not yet on the recall) which cleared up a really rich fuel issue it was causing (thus flooding my exhaust / cats). Also found a cable that was rattling against the TC and secured it to the cab and that reduced 80% of my 2,000 rpm buzz in the foot. Different fuel types also impact the vibes in my experience - if I run regular 87, the vibes are pretty bad, and it's quite a bit better with mid grade and vibes even less w/ premium. In the end I've stuck with mid grade as the best cost/benefit mix.

The slight buzzing in the steering wheel ain't going away by any means but for awhile it was getting so bad I could actually see the steering shaking and felt like the wheels were about to fall off....
