So, my best friend's younger sister has a 2010 Subaru Forester that she bought used. The car is in decent condition, but it has 99,899 miles on the clock and will be needing a timing belt/chain. She wants to trade it for a new 2019 Forester, which will not be available until the end of October (at least not at the dealership where her friend works).

She has been offered what she believes is a fair amount for an almost 9-year old car with almost 100K miles. However, she was told that once she hits 100K, the dealer will take $1,000 off of their initial offer for the trade.

My friend's sister actually left the Subie home and drove her dad's Ford Focus out to Pittsburgh this past weekend, but now she is freaking out because doesn't think she can make it to the end of the month without hitting 100K.

I told her she should just keep the 2010 Subaru and replace the timing belt. This car is paid for, and I asked her why the hell she'd want payments again when this car is fine?

Anyway, it's a base model 2010 Forester 2.5 automatic in good condition with literally just under 100K. Does anyone else think the dealer is being kind of dickish?

Yes. What a joke. They want her to make a decision quickly without using good judgement. I’d go to a different dealer.

Dealer is creating a false sense of urgency. They are masters of psychology. That is the mildest trick a dealer will play on a customer.

I'm at 195k in my '06! And she's still kicking like a mule.

My parents also had an odyssey. I don't know what year. At 220k the transmission went out. I sold it on Craigslist for them for $1800. Of course I disclosed the issues with the transmission.

I'd keep the 2010 Forester until it dies, but that's just me...

There is also a psychological affect when buying a used car. A car with 99 990 miles is more desirable than one with 100 101. Same pricing concept when selling something for $9.99 instead of $10.

I am OCD about vehicle maintenance, I've had my Taco for 9 years, and it's never failed a safety inspection or emissions test.

I am currently waiting for the dealership to finish inspecting my truck. I dropped it off at about 11am, and they're still not done. I just called the dealer and apparently I agreed to "no later than 5pm" (Newsflash: No I didn't).

I do have a free loaner, but I'm getting off work soon and I don't want to have to drive all the way back to the dealer from home...

Anyway, my primary question is this...

I know a lot of people use loopholes to obtain titles for their vehicles (@BartMaster1234 ), or to circumvent things like emissions testing, high registration fees, or "property tax".

I take great care of my truck and am sick of having to waste my time getting it inspected every year. I've been told that Maine and Vermont have loopholes that allow non-residents to register their vehicles there?

Be careful here. If the auto insurance company finds you insure/register your vehicle in one state and live in another …..

I wouldn’t keep your vehicle tagged and registered in another state if you don’t actively reside there. You become a target for local law enforcement to issue you “fix it” tickets in order to transfer the car into your home state.

I only did this so I could have paperwork that allows me to obtain a California title.

Honestly I don’t see the point of doing something like that. Just keep getting it inspected.
