You need to disconnect the harness connector in the back.

Pull off the center vent trim (just clips). Pull away the surround under the right side of the steering wheel. Just that one clip as it nests into the HVAC panel. Pull out the HVAC panel. It can be wiggled out without loosening the headunit screws. From there you can reach down and do what you need to do.

Thanks for the suggestions, some not so helpful. But i have seen videos where you just push in the two notches and pull out the silver metal piece to access the wires. i think i may need to just take apart the entire console to get to the wires and i dont want to do that. Any useful suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you talking about the one by the shifter or the one inside the center console?

My post above was for the one on the dash. It is not hard to do. Here's an enjoyable vid for some of it:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47sf5G8ZsnI&t=25s

You don't need to pull out the head unit though. Just unclip the right-most clip for the cover under the wheel and wiggle out the HVAC panel.

If you are talking about the console one, just unscrew the shift knob (the AT boots clip / snap in and the MT boots are on a 1/4turn clip). Then just pull up on the center console panel, working from the front. Make sure you have the console lid opened and work your way back. To get at the outlet, I don't think you need to undo the e brake boot, just lift up to give yourself some working room.

There's pics and instructions in the OP of this thread:

You can actually do this, but I’ll advise against it unless you already have one out to look at. There is a plastic sleeve (holds the cap/cover) and the socket is inside that sleeve. Since the sleeve is what’s holding it in the dash, you can pry the socket out of the sleeve, undo the wires, then pry the sleeve out. All without removing the dash. As others said It’s easier to remove the AC panel and work from the back though.

Thank you for the tip, i started to try and remove the AC panel but only the left side at the start button was coming out, i was afraid to pry it any further and possibly breaking it.

The left side is hooked into the panel under the steering wheel. So, you have to pop just one of the clips on the panel to get the HVAC panel out.

The HVAC panel is held in only with clips. You won't break it using the same force that you used to get the left side started.

There is a tab on the top of the HVAC panel that catches on the bottom of the head unit. You can either loosen the 4 10mm screws in the HU or just wiggle the HVAC panel out.

From there, you can reach down and unplug the power outlet and the metal piece will come out toward you. The plastic ring comes out toward you once the metal part is out.

Here's a pic with all the parts separated:

    IMG_20180106_121053.jpg

I pulled the connector off to solder on power wires for a front camera.
