Not an important question, but wondered if anyone had an answer to it?

I use the search feature on TW often, especially before I start a thread so I don't ask something that has previously been answered. Since I started using it I always leave the box checked for: "Search child forums as well", which is below the feature that lets you search the different forums. Lately, I have been unchecking that box and wondered if anybody knows what "Search child forums as well" (is it meant to be a joke?) means because I don't see any child forums on TW?

 

I’ve never seen that option, I only view the site from my phone.

 

I think it may be there for a joke because unchecking the box doesn't seem to change the results. Just always wondered if it had a purpose.

 

I think it’s part of the forum software. There aren’t any child forums except third gen.

It's just another term for "Sub-Forum"

For example, if you want to Search the entire "2nd Gen Tacomas" section, you can type in your search query for that whole forum area and selecting "Search Child Forums" will include all the Sub-Forums in the section in your search.

 

Going off of what little I remember from my high school programming class, there are "parent" and "child" functions in programming. Basically, key functions and then smaller component functions, if I remember correctly.

 

It means it will search the sub-forums as well. Example, the Automotive Group Buy forum is a child forum of the Group Buy forum, which is a child forum of the Shopping forum. If you searched for posts in the Group Buy forum with the search child forum selection unchecked it would only give results of threads posted in the Group Buy forum alone. If you included child forums results would include threads from the Group Buy, Automotive Group Buy, Non-automotive Group Buy and Closed Group Buy forums.
