OK, So my 04 has an open rear axle. From what I have read while searching it is an 8.4" ring gear. I have found a truck with a e locker rear axle in the junk yard. From what I have read it is a 8" ring gear. The problem is that it was wrecked in the rear and the housing is bent. The third member looks to be in good shape, and according to the door codes the ratio is the same on both trucks. So can I modify my 8.4" housing to accept the locker third member, or not? I have read several posts, and done some searching and cant figure out if they are saying that it can be modified to the 8.4" housing, or the older toyota truck rear axle housings. I would also like to know if my axle shafts will work with this third member set up, as my truck has abs, and the wrecked one does not. Any info would be great, as I can get this third member at one hell of a deal!!!

Can my diff housing be modified to accept the e-locker?
Yes, you will need to grind out an area in the driver side of the diff housing mounting flange to allow the actuator to fit.

    Before:
    housing3.jpg

    After:
    housing6.jpg

    Will my ABS axles work?
Yes, The ABS sensors pick up the rotational speed signal from teeth cut into the outboard end of the axle. The drive splines are the same. Since you are fitting this locker to your existing axle beam, the only concerns you have are fitting the third member to your diff housing.
You will need to sort out the wiring as well.

    There is a good write-up here: http://sonoransteel.com/phong/retrofit_electric_locker.html
It is being done on a 4Runner but essentially the same.

Yeah, it can be done as stated above, it requires mods though.

That's awesome! Thanks for posting that. So if I clearances my 8.4 for the e locker third I could reuse my stock 8.4 4.56 gear and put it in the e locker third and put all that back in the clearenced axle.

That is an 8" housing. The 8.4" housing mounting flange is larger than the 8", meaning the studs will not line up, and the studs are larger in diameter. You are better off finding a complete 8" elocker axle, retrofit a elocker into a non-elocker 8" housing like the above article shows, or getting an ARB locker for your 8.4" housing.

It is possible, but slightly more involved than that article posted above.

Nvm then! After reading that it appears to be a huge disaster. Much more expensive than just buying a 4.56 8" ring and throwing it in the Trd axle

My apologies Wes, I did not notice that you were using two different sized housings. Just look for a locker that matches your diff housing size.

I have been looking myself and they are out there. Not usually as cheap as you found it though. Best of luck.

Did you read the thread at all? The mounting flange/hole is larger on the 8.4 so the studs will not line up.

It can be done but it's alot of work and fabrication. 2 stud holes have to be welded up and redrilled and the 2 long studs added. Along with grinding housing

The relatively easy swap requiring grinding a notch and adding the long studs is for putting an e-locker into an 8" non e-locker housing. It was popular in the 3rd gen 4Runner crowd because the factory 4R non e-locker was also an 8" just without the notch and longer studs.
ECGS once sold a "kit" consisting of the longer studs and a factory e-locker gasket to serve as the drill/grinding template.
As mentioned the Taco "8.4" non e-locker housing has a completely different (larger) mount base requiring lots more work. Doable but not really practical.
