I have a 2002 Tacoma TRD 4x4 quad cab with 330k miles on original 5VZFE engine and auto transmission. Needless to say, it’s time for some repairs and I came across a 2001 2WD Pre-runner engine and auto transmission with only 100K miles for a decent price.

Are there any gurus that could chime in and let me know how hard/possible it would be put the pre-runner transmission into my 4x4? What would I need to change on the pre-runner transmission for it to work with my vehicle?

Thanks in advance for any help/replies. This forum is incredible.

If you put the 'prerunner' transmission on, you'll lose 4WD - the transfer case does not bolt up to the 'prerunner' transmission. Is the transmission in the 02 FUBARed?

In order to use the A340E(2WD) and make it a A340F(4WD) you will need to change the tail shaft and rear housing where it connects to the transfer case. That is really it, but inorder to do that, you must disassemble the most of the transmission. There are one or two write-ups on here on how to do that.

Yes, it’s possible - but you’ll have to tear down the transmission to swap the output shaft and tailhousing. Not worth the time or effort.

    Just buy an A340F.
