I've been looking for a while and couldn't find anyone with actual experience doing this, so: I am going on a road trip from Colorado to the east coast and will be visiting friends in various states along the way. However, I am sure there will be a few nights that I end up sleeping on the road. Has anyone set up their RTT in a location such as a Wal-Mart parking lot or a truck stop? Seems like it would be possible, and allow me to keep my trip more flexible in terms of time. Any input is appreciated

I’d sleep in a camper shell there, but a RTT would be a bit to conspicuous for my taste. Maybe you could start a cool thread and sleep in other tw members streets or something. Could be fun

I'd to it at the truck stop. They have showers and a cafe and gas so why the heck not? Plus truckers sleep there.

I set up at rest areas all the time on my road trips. Sleep overnight, wake up early and I'm out

You could probably find state parks along the way with free campsites to use.

Check out campendium. You can search for free campsites along your route ahead of time

Lol glad this thread got some replies month after my road trip o_O I ended up making a sleeping platform where my back seats were and just crashed at rest stops. Worked great and saved 4mpg by not having the tent. For shorter trips id probably just set up the tent at truck stops since I'm now pretty comfortable with them

That diesel smell at truck stops doesn't bother you?

Either shoot off the highway a couple miles and disappear or just pay 10 bucks at a KOA for a campsite.

I've seen campers at hotel parking lots, Wal marts, and on ramps to major interstates. Although the on ramp spots were on highways in the middle of no where.

If it were me I wouldn't sleep in a rtt if anyone could be close by. For instance, in a parking lot anyone could park right next to you. That would make me nervous. Hard sided camper, I'd probably use a hotel parking lot, but only the ones off the highway with huge parking lots for semis.

Truck stop is the way to go, those guys are too tired and on the job to fuck with anyone. You get crack heads at Walmart
