A 40mph drone is putting it lightly, my friend. It’s more like a kazoo. Mine is so loud now until it’s obnoxious. This crap has got to get fixed.

Thanks. Considering getting a Pro but then stumbled upon this thread. My 16 TRD Sport has not developed the problem yet. Fingers crossed. Sounds miserable.

Yep it's bad. Anyone who has an isolated howl at, say, 56-58mph and if it's at least tolerable... I'd steer clear of the tsb.

I know some said the tsb fixed their howl. But it didn't fix mine. Mine is worse overall. I can pretty much get it to howl at any speed from 20 to 60mph if I try. But it shows up on its own at 28-33, throughout the 40's and 57-63.

Like so many others on here, I’ve been in Tacos forever. If this issue does not get fixed then I’m done. This is 2018 and I don’t care what the cause is, this truck, or any other vehicle, shouldn’t do this. My wife doesn’t even want to ride in the truck anymore. Like others, I don’t have time to basically keep my truck in the shop. Love the truck but hate some of the issues with it.

*my second diff was worse right off the bat.

In highsight after the tsb my howl would be almost gone. As it is with the second dif and TSB I’m at about the same noise I initially complained about.

    YMMV.

I told my wife a few nights ago I’m making two more quick appointments and then lemon lawing it. She then pointed to the new Ray 10s and Falkens in the garage, along with several other yet to be installed mods, and said you need to fix that truck. I have my orders now...

Yeah I go through phases with my truck. Love-hate.

I really want to love this truck. My only complaint so far has been this howl.

When I go in for the blower fan recall I’m going to complain again about the rear end howl and see how the dealer responds.

They have been stellar so far, I just live 60miles away so it’s really not convenient for me to be down there with this issue more then I’ve already been (four times).

Honestly I’d really like to drive this truck to 200k and then pass it on to my kids.

We’ll see. I just had my third child and we are realizing that maybe we need a third row type vehicle.

My truck might be the sacrifice...

Particularly considering my wife’s current car (Acura Rdx) has been epic.

I understand all about the kids, and the sacrifices that come with them and for them. I have 6 myself. Yes, you need a third row vehicle. :). I would not count on some of the newer Acura’s being stellar at all. They seem to not be as good as they used to be, right along with Honda and Toyota. Honesty, my domestic trucks have been far better than my Toyotas. But, I like the size of the Taco and the off road abilities. I hope to get mine fixed, but admit I was banking on the TSB to fix it, and if it didn’t I had planned on making Toyota buy it back. I’d still prefer to get it fixed but I’m not sure I have the time and extra energy to see it through to getting it fixed. I spent the first 18-24 months working on my second gen with one issue after the other but Toyota finally came through and fixed that truck and I never had another issue with it. I will get mine back in the shop in the next week or so and go from there. If they tick me off then I’ll just LL it. If not I’ll try to hang tough and get it fixed.

You guys that are taking the trucks in to get them looked at... make sure you have the service advisor enter it into the computer system that you've been there, that they confirmed the sound, and have no fix. And get a service printout EVERY TIME.

You'll need those receipts to file for lemon law if you choose to go that route.

Thanks. It doesn’t matter whether or not it says no fix available. All that matters is requisite amount of service attempts for a qualifying defect, but I definitely know how to play this game. ;). My preference is obviously a fix, but I’m not confident that’ll happen. I wonder if the 19Pros with the Fox suspensions will have this issue....

I've not played the game before, but I'm playing now. With three or four service tickets in hand that say the following, I think it might be a more convincing case for me (?):
-vehicle owner reports howl sound coming from rear
    -service tech confirmed sound
    -no fix available

Demand that the service advisor enter it into the official Toyota computer system and give you a printed receipt. Be respectful, and TELL THEM why you're asking for it. If they don't abide, ask to talk to a higher-up person and ask the next guy up for the same thing. Tell them you need it to apply for lemon law. No need to get nasty. But get their attention.

I just bought a 2019 Tacoma Off-Road 4x4 manual and I am getting the same off-throttle whine in 5th and 6th gears. It's just loud enough to be annoying.

Shit. Different speeds? Isolated to 56-59mph, etc. Or in the 20's or the 40's? Details please. We should confirm whether the 19's have the updated cab mounts.

I'll collect some more info in the next week or so and post it. I'll try to get a video with some good sound as well. I just picked the truck up 2 days ago so haven't had a lot of time with it.

For the most part, it seems like the off-throttle whine is at about 50-65mph (in 5th and 6th gears for me).

I haven't noticed any whine at all slower than 50mph which is at least something.

It's not a game changer for me, but it's a bit aggrivating.

I'll keep testing and post what I find.

The 20-40ish howl is typically from the front end and solved by an existing tsb that plugs holes in the lower a arms.

Def notice a slight whine decelerating, on and off throttle with my MT... My Subaru has ppg straight cut gears so this isnt even an issue for me if it's just a NVH.

I just went and drove a 4runner today. Didn't realize how much the taco transmission has affected my driving habits. Haha when driving the 4runner I was subconsciously playing with the throttle pressure to avoid clunks and shifts. And it just seemed strange that it shifted smoothly up and down. The difference was absolutely incredible. Night and day.

I had the same experience with the T4R. The throttle response was way better. The OR I drove must have had something wrong with it because the vibration was terrible. The Limited seemed much smoother. Looking back I’m thinking the OR must have had a bad tire but admittedly my second gen Taco felt the same way on the test drive and I bought it anyway. I then spent the next 18 months in and out of the shop replacing suspension component after component, steering wheel shimmy, and you name it until they finally fixed it. Afterwards it was a great truck but geez it was a rough start. My issue with the T4R is the tiny infotainment system and dated dash. If it wasn’t for that I’d likely buy one. A modern tranny would be nice too, but I get these utes are not intended to be family haulers, although they are being used for such. If I wasn’t so bent on a truck for me I’d be driving one as my daily driver.
