I'll be headed to Tahoe this labor day weekend in my 2017 4x4 sport M/T (stock) along with a friend in his 2018 OR M/T (stock). Were looking to do some newb friendly trails with our young kids, nothing (too) hair raising and i'm looking for suggestions of some places you guys can recommend, especially in or near North Lake Tahoe.

Its been many years now; but I lived in Reno through the 90's and spent hours out crawling near Tahoe. Go to Truckee, pick up a map and head down to Verdi. Climb up and over into Dog Valley. At the bottom of the hill hang a hard right and wander through the woods to the back side of Peavine Mnt. Keep going and you will come out on 395, and can loop back to 80 and Tahoe. Or... go at dusk and find Crystal Peak (I don't remember the specifics of getting there any more, thus the map). Used to be a crystal mine there and they spark when you throw them... have a malted beverage and make your own fireworks. Or, cut left and wander over to Stampede and Boca reservoirs. If this is too mellow wander up of hwy 20 or Donner pass... you'll find some dents up there.

I go down off of 89 near Kirkwood. We went to Iron Mountain last weekend its an old abandon ski resort.
was very mellow. but great views and fun stuff to play in. 4350150905032196082.jpg 8329503045260898589.jpg 39041987_2356872310997159_4613353414926008320_n.jpg 39104600_2356872454330478_5550469825274314752_n.jpg 39173192_2356872227663834_1295456874862215168_n.jpg

Just checked this out via google images. Any issues with others hanging around or like the access, mellow? Will have to check it out next time I head up to Tahoe. Abandoned sites can be pretty cool with the camera.

Access is easy its just off of 89. pull right into the top. there is not a lot of trails and I don't think i put it into 4wd. But there was a lot of cool stuff there.

When I was checking it out via google maps looks like one of the roads might be clear but the other they blocked.

That is cool that you worked there. I told some of my instructors about it last season. It blew there minds that a ski resort shut down like that.

Yeah, its a small but killer spot if you know it. It was only busy when the the road would close and you couldn’t make it to Kirkwood.
The other issue was the elevation. The snow could be good, but not like Kirkwood.

I worked at Kirkwood as well. Carson ski resort(Iron mtn.)was owned by a bunch of kiwis at the time and when we got slow they got us jobs at the wood. It was good times right out of high school!

Unfortunately Genoa ended up being a bit too far of a drive from where we were staying. I ended up doing this route instead.

    https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mount-watson-trail

it was plenty of fun for my first off road adventure.

This looks AWESOME!, is it easily accessible? able to just drive up it or follow a trail? Don't normally go off roading but looking for good places to start.
