SR-71A said it, just about any radio will do you well. Its all about antenna and grounding as I found out. I almost went with the Pro520xl like Boogie and many others but instead went with the Midland 1001LWX (Amazon) because it was very similar to the Pro520 but has NOAA weather scans which I listen to daily.

I have a 2 ft firestick on a spring located on a tailgate mount and I can pick up truckers in my area up to 2-3 miles away clearly which was my intent. Any further and I am looking into getting a UHF/VHF radio and my license.

@crashnburn80 hooked me up with his TRD catback . Worked from home today and had time to install it.

Install was pretty painless (~30mins start to finish) minus one minor issue I ran into with the rear hanger not matching up. Realized DCSB 05-11 hangers differ slightly from 12-15 -- my fault, should've done my due diligence.

Quick trip out to a local exhaust shop and $22 later, I had the old hanger cut off and a new one welded on.

Sounds great and barely louder than stock unless you really step on it.

Glad you like it and it ended up working out. I didn’t realize there was a hanger change either. Hangers actually changed in 13, which makes it even more confusing since it wasn’t part of the 2012 facelift update.

Nice 45, except the tailgate lettering and split rims. Love the color.

I need to put my long bed on...

Took it off. Drove around. Put it back on. Will probably go TRD exhaust one day.

Some upcoming wiring projects (sound system, HAM radio, switches, 12V distribution in bed) need prep, so I started with battery ground terminal and wires. Was going to do positive but ran out of light. Feels good to get better stuff in.

Can't believe how much people want for the blockier military style top post terminals. These are just as beefy and at least half the price- $10 vs 20-30 for a pair on ebay.

I already had the Kenwood TM-281A in my '96 so I've stolen that. The forward firing speaker is nice even though that radio is pretty plain for features. Since there was a bracket being sold for the auto's shift console I got one of last of those.

I've got a couple Yaesus in other trucks and a Yaesu hand-held and both brands have pros/cons. Quality is great between them all. I would get an ICOM too if one worked for a build. The builtin speaker on the Kenwood is a huge feature as you don't need to figure out an external speaker (which you really need with nearly any radio, CB or HAM).

If I didn't already have a radio, I'd probably get another Yaesu (mine aren't made anymore) like the FTM-100DR, or FT-8900R. Probably the Kenwood TM-D710GA in that brand. APRS is fun with ability for friends and family to track you at aprs.fi
