Funny enough, AFE sells one that actually is carb compliant, as crazy as that sounds.

I'd be a little weary of using the 80lb injectors because with a 61lb injector, the duty cycle at idle is 1%. With 80lb injectors, the DC would have to be less than 1% DC to idle smoothly.

Oh I know the snorkel is a restriction. I've ran tests with and without it. But I need the cleaner air vs pulling from the fender. I was getting stupid rich conditions even with my TRD and my AFE Stage 2.

The surging I highly suspect is due to restriction with my cats. I would give a more accurate AFR number.. but like I said.. it buries it at 10. I upgraded my fuel pump years ago when I first got the blower, and just recently changed the in-line filter. I've cleaned all filters, MAF, etc.

It doesnt affect the AFR when it does surge, I've tried with and without the snorkel connected. I've tracked and fixed any and all vacuum leaks. The surging is hit and miss on pulls.. and if I stay in it.. it will sometimes pull its way through it and be fine. sometimes it sticks around and makes the truck jerk.. letting off the throttle and easing back into it, it goes away.

I know Jberry had similar issues, and it turned out to be his cats were clogged/restrictive. That's another reason I'm leaning heavily towards the cat/Y-pipe. My cats are welded in, so I cant do a quick, easy test. I could unbolt it and go straight header for a couple pulls, but that wont be a fair test/comparison. That's why I've been looking for a shop that will just make me a 2nd Y pipe with no cats. I'm fairly certain clogged/restrictive cats are the cause..

I really get how you dont want to be dependent on auxiliary fuel to spare a meltdown. I'm also under the hood so often I dont mind at all. 90 seconds to fill the tank every fill up is no biggie for me. I'm weird though. I mainly use methanol as a safety net as my truck is far from paid for. When I get my final pulley setup I'll get a custom tune. Then I'll have it meth dependent at like 4k to redline. If I ran low I'll just not go all out. Seattle traffic makes it very tough to floor it anywhere.

I like this so much I may put this on page 1 of the thread. Mix your quote with my quote and make it a big giant blower rulebook. :D

Where is your gauge AFR sensor hooked into, pre cats or post cats at the y pipe? That may be a false AFR reading.

Your cats could very much be the issue, from what it sounds like. When you get the chance get your y made, if that takes care of the surging, problem solved!

@rjbiii i just read your post again and noticed your choice of words. You say AFR “drops off” meaning it goes rich, not lean, when it bogs down at WOT? I initially interpreted that as lean.

Cats definitely look like a strong suspect. You've certainly done a lot of trouble shooting already.

The inline fuel filter isn't where you'd see the first issue with fuel delivery. The inline filter protects your injectors/regulator. My issue happened at the bottom of the pump in the tank. The pump had worked its way to the bottom of the tank and the screen that came with the pump got fully blinded. Somehow got a bunch of junk in the tank and probably had a bit of coating rubbed off the outside of the pump. Either way, when I was on the trail at a slightly inclined angle, the engine would actually cut out on me. Glad I didn't get stuck out there!

Also, with your AFR not falling off, this probably isn't it!

oh damn! hmmm.. its been about 5 or 6 years since I installed mine, about the only thing I remember is having to cut those same slots in the factory pump housing.

I've had the truck go into limp mode on the trail in the middle of the desert once... due to a clogged filter I later realized back at camp. It did it again on a later trip and I knew what it was then. That was my justification for the snorkel. no issues since... minus restriction. give and take I guess..

    FTFY, and here we go..

    Heres my setup for starts:
    2.8 qwikchange pulley
    Urd spec-u headers
    Walbro 255
    Jfr y-pipe
    aFe exhaust
    Stock 265/65/17s
    S/c installed at 47,500 miles
Currently have about 8000 miles on s/c

Heres what ive done in chronological order:
    - replaced k&n filter w/ paper OEM filter
    - cleaned MAF (old one multiple times, then replaced and have cleaned the new one as well)
    - cleaned throttle body
    - Double checked all hoses from pcv, brake booster, VSV, passenger valve cover vent to intake, fuel pressure regulator, bypass valve, etc were tight and are not routed incorrectly
    - added hose clamp to vaccum tubing from bypass valve to the back of s/c - did not add one to the hose end attaching to the bypass valve, it was pretty tight on there
    - Replaced MAF Sensor (w/ oem denso)
    - recalibrated VSC after lowering the truck
    - removed bypass restrictor jet
    - Changed intake from stock airbox to URD TCAI
    - replaced fuel filter w/ napa gold 3296
    - added fuel pressure gauge (holds 41-42psi to redline)
    - UCON was sent to Gadget and he tested it on his truck for a week; was unable to replicate above mentioned problems)
    - replaced headers & y-pipe (Running no cats)
    - replaced fuel bowl (original got a hole cut in the side during install)
    - racetronix plastic fuel hose upgrade
    - re-installed bypass restrictor jet
    - blew out all connections on injectors, coil packs, ECU, UCON, MAF sensor, & throttle body w/ compressed air
    - replaced both front AFR/o2 sensors (w/ OEM denso)
    - did compression test; #s below
    #6 200psi
    #4 195psi
    #2 202psi
    #5 199psi
    #3 200psi
    #1 197psi
    - replaced all spark plugs with new ones gapped to .032" about 1500 miles ago (denso ikh22)
    - looked over all injector bushings and everything looked normal
    - replaced all coil packs with OEM denso units (was having a p0300 as well as all the individual misfire codes a while back, and havent had any after replacing the coil packs; also had a p0353 that hasnt come back- all of these codes were intermittent and did not occur during the problems discussed above while at WOT)
    - cleaned all intake piping, MAF, throttle body again

    I think thats everything..

Really gonna try to stick it out, i love the adaptivity of the ucon, its one of the main reasons i went with it. I dont think its belt slip since i only have a 2.8 pulley. I think its 2.7 and down that you need to start thinking about addressing slip, but im not sure on this.. the folks on this forum never cease to amaze me. The wealth of knowledge on this site is incredible

I have considered this, but the odds of finding a 6spd 4wd ecu with the TRD tune is incredibly slim.. might still post up and see if anyone has one theyre selling. The dealers in my area refused to reflash my truck- they said they dont have access to the software anymore

U no the urd intake with a 6 speed is a different animal. I installed the intake. And when u let off the gas and coast at all. Or barely give it gas it doesn’t no what to do due to the air flow on the maf sensor. I’ve also had it stall a couple times on me. Planning to fix it this winter.

Based on all the in information and data you have given I have every single reason to believe that the issue is not hardware based. It is software based.

If one of us has access to Toyota Techstream software, the firmware reflash for the TRD tune may be available from Toyota on a nationwide level. If we are able to do that, we may be able to flash over the software directly to your ECU. I refuse to believe that the file for the TRD tune is no longer available. Let me make a call to Magnuson tomorrow and pick their brain regarding the files. Perhaps they still have something available on their end. I am having a hard time believing it is that proprietary.

You almost HAVE to find a private guy to do the work. No shop in my state will touch your exhaust for cat delete. 10k fine if they do it. Only if it came trailered in with no plates would they even try.

I'd bet software is still available. @o0opackersfano0o could probably verify that.
