It's not the fuel stations at fault. The supposed lifetime filter is a strainer. It is a sham in my opinion. I pulled apart my old factory pump and nothing within it other than the motor and pump assembly. You never put a fine micron rated filter before the pump. It will create too much strain on the pump or prevent it from sucking fuel to begin with. 100 micron strainer is the minimum filtration on the suction side of the pump.

Also the pump strainer and pump assembly can be purchased from Denso for about 120 dollars. The entire sending unit from Toyota is easily 4 times that.

This is true but typically the line will back flow and flush the area. Keeping a clean work environment is key.

I ran Gagets kit for many years no major issues. Had the internal check valve stick causing the entire line to drain back to the tank. That created long starting issues. Not Gagets fault as a matter of fact he was the one over the phone telling me how to check it. Great guy and service.

The first gen trucks up to 2004 had a frame mounted fuel filter along with an in tank strainer. I believe the 2.4 2RZ-FE was block mounted on the drivers side hidden somewhat behind the intake manifold.

Well done. Be cautious and monitor fuel trims. The OEM pump I had was beginning to struggle with the added load pushing through the filter. Had a lean knock a few times but the trims told the entire story. I've got another in tank module I will eventually add another fuel pump externally mounted to make pump changes easier. Seems the factory unit doesn't have the flow capable to sustain the fuel rail when running hard. ECM automatically defaults to a 12.0:1 AFR at WOT. When that happens the catalytic converter temps climb to near 1700 degrees.

I haven't noticed anything yet but I am working on swapping the pump for a better one. ( Getting ready for the supercharger lol)

I've got another iteration in the works, pics to come in coming days/weeks.
I'm upgrading the pump and adding a flex fuel sensor for my turbo build, so decided to add a filter while I was at it.
